Computer hates me.

Sunday night i was doing the usual crap on my pc, surfing and messeging, did a defrag then went to bed. The next morning tried to start it then something pops up saying there is problem and i should choose 1. safemode 2. safemode with networking... 3.normal, so i chose normal and it came back then i chose safemode no help. After getting tired of it decided to pull out my trusty winxp pro. cd and decided to do a clean format and install, after reformatting my hard drive and windows checks my hardrive something pops up saying "windows has performed maintenance on your hard disk, cannot continue with instillation until restart" so i then proceeded to restart it finally it began to install files then somthing pops up saying windows cannot install config.sys files or something. I have tried winxp pro. home, 2000, even winME for god sakes. To make things more complicated my dvd drive wont respond but my cdrw does. here are my specs is it my hard drive?.

I think you need to fdisk it and completely remove the partion table on it. Whatever you've done to it now I don't think you'll be recovering any data on it. To get started you'll need a windows 98 2nd ed boot disk to do the fdisk if it'll even let you. If that doesn't work you'll need the tools to do a low level format of the drive. You may be able to do that in your bios but if not you'll need to get some tools from your drive manufacturer to do it.

Fdisk it to remove any partions on it and do fdisk /mbr to get rid of the master boot record. But don't create any partitions do that with your XP cd.

As for your dvd drive not responding, is it not being seen in the BIOS or is it just not reading your XP cd?
