What to use?

Hi,

I'm installing Linux for the first time, and i will be using Mandrake 10. What i want to do is to use a webserver, email server, database and possibly an ftp.
I know apache a little since i use it on my main rig and i know it's included in the Mandrake setup (Apache2). I also believe that MySql should be used with the databases and i will probably try a little with Vbulletin as well. I'm a noob at just about anything of this, so a few tips on which applications to use would be appreciated.

First I'd recomend Dbain for your linux install it's far more robust and doesn't suffer form some of the pre-install hell that Mandrake does when selecting packages. Also if setting up a server is your goal Dbain is far more stable and secure then mandrake.

Anyway for your web server Apache, for Database MySql or Postgress, ftp really doesn't matter stock ftp is fine as it's the security of your webserver that realy effects the security of your FTP server.

The Install went perfectly fine and Mandrake is running ok. But i'm the noobest of noobs with Linux, that's the problem. I am currently trying to hunt down drivers for the mainboard. (DFI Lanparty B Nforce2). I think i have downloaded the right Mysql but i need a walkthrough on how to install it together with Apache again.

oh boy mac. you're in for some frustrating fun. anyhow, the version of mysql that you downloaded, does the filename end in .tar.gz, or .rpm? it might already be installed too, got to your /etc/ directory, is there a mysql folder there? also check to see if you a file called mysqld in /etc/init.d/ to make sure.
