Does McAfee (any version) require activation? Please say no, but the truth is of higher priority.

Also, what do you guys think are the good antivirus programs?

Not sure about your activation question as I loath MacAfee since it totally fowled up one of my computers 10 years ago. I've never installed it or recommended it since. I've been a Norton fan in corporate environment and for people that don't trust free software. But this year when my subscription to Norton ran out I switched to AVG and I'm lovin it. Oh and AVG is free...

Oh, just to let you know with my Norton, All I had to do was reinstall it to extend the subscription another year. I didn't need to do this, I just had to back in my os problem days (last August-December). My original subscription started out in late November, but last I installed it was middle of February and that is when it "expires". I am just looking for another antivirus to ensure my security from virus since I think I have one that Norton senses and is constantly warning about (VERY annoying and cannot stop it) but can't delete or quaranteen.

Norton up until this years you could just re-install and get away with getting another year out of it. But the new 2004 version has an activation BS that you have to go through so it won't let you do that. Or at least that's what I've been told. I just switched to AVG after my 2003 ran out since I got tired of the activation shit.

Good thing I got 2003 then. Can they stop me from doing this somehow though? And do they ever stop supporting (in download/update wise) the older versions to get you to buy new ones? 2003 and 2004 are virtually the same, if all updates are present, correct.

Anyway, the Avast I downloaded and didn't seem to do much more than norton in windows, but when rebooted its scanning GOOD and has deleted several viruses, including one I noticed in something I've had a long time and didn't know was there. Maybe the virus just spread though, I don't know. Its still scanning (lots of stuff!) so I don't know the end result yet. What is this AVG?

I think with older versions of norton they stop supporting software upgrades but you can still get the updated virus definitions. Though I'm not sure how long you can keep doing the uninstall-reinstall trick.

Keep in mind some anti-virus software has been known to label non-viruses as viruses. I'm not saying that is the case here but it can happen.

AVG stands for something Anti-Virus Guard probably I don't know. Anyway it's just another anti-virus software but it's free and it's well supported, tested and up there in the usage ratio. They have corporate versions also but you have to pay for them. But they are a lot cheaper then Norton's corporate software.
