Anything new coming in DVD drives?

I rebuilt my system around x-mas of 2003, and at the time I heard there was a new technology soon to be released that would allow like 9.8gigs of info to be saved onto a DVD. Because of that I didn't buy a DVD-burner. Now it's 4 months later and I still am not hearing about anything new.

Did I miss the release? Did it fizzle, or do I have to wait longer? At this point I'm getting tired of waiting. Anyone hear anything?

    Dual layer is out (ie. 8.5GB per disk).

    How expensive are we talking and is it compatible with desktop DVD players?
