DVD Writer Software

I currently own a DVD writer & decided to backup some of my DVDs as one of my best films got damaged and didn't want the same thing happening to the rest. I tried to copy it but it didn't work. I spoke to the man in the shop where I bought it & was told that all DVD writters can't copy direct from DVD to DVD without the special software. Is this true & if so where can I get it? I've tried using a program called DVD Shrink but when I played the DVD it wasn't watchable - is this because of the settings I used when burning it or because theres a better program to shrink it? I use Nero when burning so what are the best settings?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Just bought DVD X Copy Xpress today! Ha! I'm copyng one of my movies for backup library as we type. Use the original program on the cd. Don't update it and you can copy your movie. And I am no way encouraging or suggesting anything illegal here. Just making backups for my home movie library.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Do you know where I can get a copy of DVD X Copy Xpress? & does it copy DVDs that are double layered disk because I've been told that these are difficult because they are bigger than your standard blank DVDs?

    Thanks again

I personally use Veritas/Stomp RecordNow DX. I asked a similar question in here several monthes ago, and tried lots of different software, and i ended up settling on this veritas program. i will occassionally use nero, but thats fairly rare. yeah, and i had heard that dvd x copy is nuked to communicate back with their servers or the fbi . . . or whoever, even if you are making a perfectly legal back up copy. anyway, that just always raises red flags in my mind. anyway, so thats my suggestion. a healthy base of veritas with a dash of nero.

And as for the double layer density disks (also known as DVD9, yes?), i dont know if any software supports that. to the best of my knowledge, sony just came out with the first dvd9 burner available to the public a few weeks ago. so depending one who is ahead, hardware or software (typically its hardware), you might not see the ability to burn these for a little while, but the good news, is that unless you have that sony burner (it was a big hullaballoo, cuz it was the first), then you cant burn those anyway.

ok, i hope all that helps :D

I picked my copie up at BJ's Wholesale club. But most stores that carry software will have it. Staples, Sams Club, Best Buy, Comp USA, etc. And I'm pretty sure it will copy the bigger disks.

Thanks Hawk, only problem is I'm from the UK & none of the shops here sell any DVD copying software. I've just found a site that selling it for £99.99 ($150) is that an ok price or could I get it cheaper else where?

I was told to try DVD Shrink so I did yesterday & it worked fine until it came to the burning. I tried burning it straight from the program & also encoding the DVD to hard drive first (picture looked great) then using nero and on both occasions it stoped at about 85%-does anybody know what would cause this?

    Thanks Again

If I'm working from a file I use Nero 6 Ultra with it's Nero Vision express to make make my dvd's. If I'm working from a dvd that needs to be ripped I use DVD shrink first tell it to just make the files then burn the project with Nero and I've never had a problem.
