memory latency meanings, noobie help and answer please

what do the latencies mean? X-X-X-X Is lower always better? How good does it make the memory and in what areas?

I've seen corsairs latency for ddr2 at like 4-4-4-8 where as ddr is at 2-3-2-6, does this mean ddr2 is worse in that way in this example? (ignoring clock speed, unless that instantly makes it outperform.

I guess I'll throw in one more question, here goes. What is dual channel memory and how does it help? I know it's 2 separate chips on newer mobos but that is it. Does matched memory actually help over 2 identical sticks?

    oh, do timings have to be at minumum 2?

    :confused: I know very little, as this stuff is complex, but I do know that 2 is as low (the best) as you can go. ;)
