Linksys 54g Router Internet Ip address

Briefly, I am trying to find out if there is a way to change the Ip address of the router on the internet while playign online games. For example, I play online games and when I am playing the game, the IP address that everyone can see is 68.2xx.xxx.xxx. This is different then the one issued by my ISP. The one issued by my ISP is 24.xxx.xxx.xxx. Basically I was online and noticed another players IP address that was showing up was the one his router actually assigned to his PC, which is 192.xxx.xxx.xxx. How did he do this?? If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks!

    Heya and welcome, Swat.

192.168.xxx.xxx is a private address range, not 192.xxx.xxx.xxx. I've seen plenty of servers using 192.x

Not sure about the whole changing ip deal tho. Technically, changing your IP during an online game will disrupt your network connection.

But, did you specifically purchase a static ip from your ISP?

Hey and thanks for the welcome and the reply. Let me rephrase. My router address showing up during an online game is 68.202.xxx.xxx My private DHCP issued IP address from the router to my PC is 192.168.xxx.xxx. I there any way to allow my private IP to show up instead of the router internet IP of 68.202.xxx.xxx. I was online and noticed a players IP during a game was showing up as their private IP of 192.168.xxx.xxx and he didnt know how he did it (probably lying). I am trying to understand all of this stuff and it is not making sense. FOr example: If I do not use my router and use only my cable modem, I get an IP of 24.168.228.xxx. If I plug my router in I then get that 68.202.xxx.xxx IP that the internet can see.

One more Question, Is there any such program in existance that will project any Ip address you want to the internet while playing online games? For example, My router shows a certain IP address of 68.202.134.xxx to the people on the internet playing the game with me. Is there such a program that allows a user to fake the router or internet out by the user inputting there own made up IP address for all to see instead of the actual routers IP?

Private IP's are not routable on the internet. In the hacking scene there are such things as IP spoofing, but it doesn't add up in your scenario.

"However, IP spoofing is an integral part of many network attacks that do not need to see responses..."

Maybe the user you saw was connecting to his own server from another local machine. Speaking of which, may I ask why do you want to do so?

As to why there is a discrepancy between the two ip's (64.x and 24.x), your router and computer should receive the exact same address because they're both just nodes. It's not like something is different between the two. You should probably call your ISP.

Thanks for the reply again. The whole reason behind my questions is a work around from being banned off online games. I play IGI-2 online and there is one server where one of the admins banns anyone for just breathing wrong. When you are playing the game you can see everyones IP address that is playing. This is where the admin would get the IP to ban. I was trying to fiind out a way to somehow change my internet IP whenever I wanted therefore getting around the Ban. As far as the Router IP and the cable modem IP being different, I tried something a minute ago: I hooked my desktop PC directly up to my cable modem and released and renewed the IP and got an IP address of 68.202.134.xx. I then put my router back in the scenario and now I have an IP of 68.202.134.xxx. the last digits are the only thing different but somehow they are different. I cant figure it out.

The last few octets will always be different because your ISP assigns you a dynamic IP address, unless you purchased a static IP which doesn't change.

Additionally the rate on which a dynamic IP changes varies, so if you get banned do a release/renew.

Thanks. So no ideas on how to actually change that whenever I would like to? Or, somehow get the IP address that everyone can see online to be different than what it actually is?

Sorry, forgot to add something. My dynamic IP from my ISP has a 24 hour lease time. I cant release and renew it unless I have my equipment off when that lease time comes around, then start it all back up and get a new one.
