suse 9.1 install problems . . .

ok, so i got some problems with suse 9.1, i am running it at work, but someone else installed it, so i dont know how they did. however, i am a n00b when it comes to linux, but i really like suse 9.1, so dont try to get me to try other distro's :D anyway, i am having real problems with it.

A) it doesnt boot off the dvd. it can read it, but there is no way to boot off of it. this is fairly well documented, and i understand i have to use some boot disks.

B) i have to use rawrite to get some 3.5 disk images onto the disks, but i get boot failure every single time. i have tried different floppy drives, different floppy controllers (mobo's), different disks, everything. i dont know what the problem is.

C) i had suse 8.2, so i installed that, thinking that maybe i could upgrade or do a "clean" install from the command line, but i am too much of a n00b to figure this out.

i tried a few other things, but those were the big ones. does anyone have any ideas/help that might be able to work? its really pissing me off. i just want it on my pc :(

i know suse 9.1 is fairly new, so some folks might not be familiar with that particular distro, but they should all be relatively about the same for starting an install from the command line, right?

TIA :D

    can you get suse 9.1 on cd format and then boot off of a bootable cd?

    As for your boot disk issues. I'm not sure specifically I've never installed Suse but I've had other distro's before that you had to make boot disks for and I just followed the instructions with no problems.

    What sort of boot failure are you getting? Is it that it's not booting at all or is it just not finding the distro packages on the DVD to install from?

    yeah, yesterday i talked with the linux guru's at work, and they told me something about "el torito" or something, and apparently its something in the bios or linux or both that allows you to boot off of a dvd/dvd drive. i dont entirely understand it, but they said that if i didnt feel like solving the problem, the best solution was to just get the cd version. so i went ahead and did that, and it seemed to solve my problems (in that it will now install)

    with that said, even though i had some problems, i have nothing but glowing things to say about suse 9.1, the new KDE, and the new core. if there is any linux distro that you could use as a desktop replacement, this is it. besides my knucklehead error above, it should be really easy. thats one of the things i found so frustrating was that everyone on google said they got suse 9.1 to install without so much as a hiccup. so, i guess my case is rare. who knows, anyway, everyone should give it a try or at least download the 1 cd live eval (just like knoppixx, it doesnt install or change anything on your hd, but runs right off of ram and the cd drive). its really great :D

    Just note that the live CD requires 256MB of ram to run smooth. But as you said 9.1 is a huge step forward for linux. Forget the free distros, once you start getting your head round installing Java, Flash, Real player, Acrobat reader etc. etc. you will be pulling the hair out of your head. Suse gives a gentle introduction to linux by installing the lot by default, so you can enjoy the system without jumping right into a steep learning curve.

    warrior++

    i couldnt have said it better. the other day, someone was complaining about suse's 5 cds/dvd, and as far as i am concerned with linux, the less i have to do later, the better. so, that is fine by me.

    incidentally, did any gamers notice the *.sh file in the ut2k4 cd/dvd directory of the install cd? its for linux, and i installed it, and surprisingly, it worked very well, i just didint have the *best* drivers for my 9800 as i have not yet tackled the world of drivers for linux yet :D

    You're not the only only one having trouble installing it. I downloaded the iso file, burnt it to DVD and tried to install it on my lappy. the dvd boots ok and goes into the install but I get different errors all the through and the installation barfs. Oh well guess I'll have to buy the dvd.
