Help, "The page cannot be displayed"

edited June 2004 in Science & Tech
Someone help if you can.

When I try to check my email or log into personal accounts IE says it cannot find server. I've lowered the privacy to accept all cookies and it still does this. What should I do?

first I'd say you've made changes to your hosts file and have it blocked but I'm guessing that's not the case.

So go into IE and delete all offline files and cookies. Make sure you have your privacy settings all set to minimum. Reboot (just for safe measure) and try to get back to the page. You could have a bad/outdated cookie that is causing that error.

Also make sure that your version of IE is up to date. It's also possible you have some ad/spyware that is highjacking those sites but it's redirecting you to a broken link which woulc also cause that "Page cannot be displayed" error.

    Thanks Kyrrst,

I did what you suggested but it didn't solve the problem. IE only says it cannot find the server when I try to check email or log onto my bank or other secure sites. Is it possible that I might have accidentally deleted something in the registry or hijack this. I had the about:blank problem that is on other threads and seem to have that solved but this didn't start happening until that was fixed. And it only happens once I enter my username and password.

    Any other suggestions?

Here is one other thing you could try. Install Firefox or some other browser and see if you can get to those sites (my guess is you will be able to). Then go to the microsoft update page through browser X. It'll say you need to be running IE explorer to view this page and send you to a link to download IE6. Dl it and re-install it.

If you can't get to those sites through browser X. Then the problem is something else going on in your system. My guess would be something screwy with your hosts file or spy/ad-ware as I can't think of anything else it would be.
