ie says cannot connect to server everytime i try to connect to a website

it is actually my friend with this problem, but she can't even get to this site to post it herself. everytime she goes to internet explorer and types in a website it says "cannot connect to server", and doesn't let her go to the page. i tried to tell her about adaware, spybot, hijackthis, but she can't get to any of it to use it. can someone please give me some suggestions to tell her? thanks so much.

    Have her put: 205.205.121.101 in her browser so we can tell if the problem is dns or total internet connectivity.

    she is at work right now, i will be sure to tell her this, she won't be able to try this until tomorrow around 6 or so, so if you can be on then so you can tell us what to do after she does this i would appreciate it. thanks.

    Can she retrieve email, send instant messages, ping her isp's sites anything like that at all? What kind of internet connection does she have dial-up/highspeed....router, firewall etc...etc...
