Wireless Security

edited June 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi All,

I just setup a Netgear WGR614 802.11g Wireles Router and Netgear Wireless PCI Card in another system of mine (running Windows ME).

I want to prevent neighbors or other computers from using (or piggybacking on) my wireless connection. How do I do so?

Thank you,

Jack

you have a couple different options. If you do all three, then you possibly have the greatest security a home user can have, altho performing all three is not necessary to prevent your neighbor from accessing your wireless network.

    1) Enable encryption: only users with the correct encryption key will be allowed on your network. To do this, in your wireless access point's control panel, you would generate a 64 or 128-bit key, and input that same key into your computer(s) wireless setting.

    2) Enable MAC filtering: only specified computers will be allowed

    3) Disable SSID broadcast: this will prevent anyone from seeing your wireless network

    Hope this helps ya.

    Thank you, Versello.

    Quick couple of questions:

    1. The encryption you mention in item one, is this WEP?

    2. After I specify the encryption key in the router, I then specify the key for the wireless PCI card, correct?

    Thanks again,

Yes the encryption he mentioned is WEP

And yes after you specify the WEP code on the wireless router you spec it on your pci card.

The other thing you can do is just make it so that you can only have one dhcp connection to the wireless router at a time. If you are the one with that dhcp lease it is impossible for anyone else to get on that box as long as your computer is on.
