Linux on sata

edited June 2004 in Science & Tech
Basically I want to install linux on my new pc which has only one sata drive, linux does not work with these.
I have heard a few things about how I might go about this (magical drivers, patches, etc) but alas, here I am, and linux is not here.
Could anybody enlighten me?
Thankyou in advance.

never installed linux on sata so I can't help you. But what version of linux have you tried?

debian r2 I think... I dont have the cds anymore but aparently all linux distros have this same problem.
I have heard that kernel 2.6.x works with satas, but the only distro available to me with it, is fedora. Does anybody know where to patch the installer, or something of the same effect?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, again.

Gentoo Linux will also work on sata seeing as you can use any kernel you please. Sata works perfectly fine as far as I know on 2.6.x series linux kernels.

Perhaps I wasnt acting as n00b as I should have been.
I have no idea how to do this, do I dl the kernel to a floppy and insert it at the specified time during the installer?
    Is the installation process easy?

download a linux iso install package from gentoo or fedora and that'll burn it onto a cd(s). Then you pop in the first cd reboot your computer it'll boot from the cd and start the install process.
