edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
I've been pulling my hair out of my head for 11 hours now. Heres the situation....

I put together a brand new pc (specs at bottom) and i go to install windows xp pro from the cd. I have no a: drive, so i booted right to the cd. It starts to go into the setup process(all of this in dos-windows, like not the real windows, but the dos-grafic-like windows setup). It formats my HDD, and then it copies files to the harddrive. It then says that it needs to reboot and when it does so, it reboots and then doesn't boot from the harddrive, but back to the cd and it starts over again. 10 minutes later or so (takes forever) windows setup comes up and im back where i started. HELP ME!!!!

MOBO: ASUS P4P800 SE
Processor: Inter Pentium 4 3ghz w/ HT
HDD: Samsung 160 gb
Grafix card: GeForce FXX 5200
Ram: SAmsung 2x 256mb chips (512mb total)
Lite-on DVD Burner

msg me on aim: rentaL99 if you have the solution or post it here , please help.

When it starts to reboot - go into BIOS and set it to boot from the HD you installed to, NOT the CD. Then the install will finish.

MOST 'Boot from CD' sequences have a timer - "Press a button to boot from CD" - In my minimal experience. If no button pushed - it boots from next item in list.

What kind of CD are you trying to install from? its not one you have "made" youself by any chance is it?

rental, is that harddrive a SATA by any chance? Set the boot order to SATA or SATA raid if there is one, or HDD 0 if that's the only drive. Not all bioses looks for the first hdd, some calls hdd 0 the primary IDE drive on the first channel. (most mainboards have 2 ide channels, but each have a primary and a secondary connection)

    Did you get this working?

What jumper settings did you have on the drive. I had the same issue, but it was because I was being an idiot and had the jumper setting on the drive on master ,when there was only one drive on the cable. Needed to be set at CS (cable select), which tells the drive it is the only one on the cable. Hope this helps if you haven't solved it.

Good to hear it helped someone else, it was driving me mad, and there was nothing on google about it at all.
