Catalyst 3.9 Investigations

edited November 2003 in Science & Tech
Following up from a recent article on the ATI Catalyst 3.8 temperatures, Neon Cowboy over at [link=http://www.driverheaven.net]Driver Heaven[/link] has performed an investigation into the recently released Catalyst 3.9 driver suite. You'll need to register to be able to read the whole article.

[blockquote]Recently, we had all had a heard a bunch of rumors about cat 3.8’s having thermal issues. So as most of you know. I went through and did some testing to get past the myth and get down to the facts. For those of you who missed it the article can be found here: Ati Drivers Put To The Test: Surprising results. Well I’m back again to follow through on the commitment and bring you the same test with the new official 3.9’s
[/blockquote]
[blockquote]I wanted to see and show other weather the rumors of problems are true or not. I started off with the latest omega drivers based on the 3.8.5's since they were already in my system. I ran good old driver cleaner in between installs. Also all 3 temps were taken @ the exact same point in 3dmark just after test 3 while loading/starting test 4. Nothing on the desk or pc was moved (except my mouse) from start to finish.

Oh gee...another try-to-get-members article. Do they actually find out anything in the end?

    Official Cat. 3.7’s
    Idle 41.5
    Full Load 47.6

    Official Cat. 3.8’s
    Idle 40.9
    Full Load 46.3

    Omegas based on 3.8.5
    GPU
    Idle 47.1
    Full Load 55.6

    Official Cat. 3.9’s
    GPU
    Idle 41.6
    Full Load 45.3

I took out the memory temps they had included because the 3.9's had no memory tests preformed, and the rest all had the exact same memory temperatures.

Maybe because you can't see it without joining their site and logging in ? (I don't mind but I think that's what NS was getting at.

Yes...news that can't be read is rather disappointing. Something to keep in mind for the next time.

But let me summarize since I've spent the last umpteen days benching the 9700 PRO and 9800 PRO with the Cat 3.8's and 3.9's on an INTEL 3.06 HT and AMD 3200+ system.

    Nadda.

    Nothing.

No wild temperatures. No flickers. No problems except for Code Creatures having some issues at 1600x1200 on the INTEL system with the 9700 PRO with the CAT 3.9s.

18 benchmark programs, 25 different benchmark runs on 2 cards x 2 systems.

I'm really tired of benchmarking. ;D

Glad to here that. No more problems then. Nice that ATi fixed it so soon but let's hope future drivers don't cause similar problems.

Mediaman, didn't you mention somewhere that you had 2 different versions of the "official" ATI 3.8 release? The difference being the dates? I guess I'm wondering what "official" 3.8 release you used.

I think MediaMan is just proving what a large portion of the community has known all along: Correlation does not equal causation.

Gaming friend of mine was having monitor shut-off problems with his 9800 pro using both the 3.8s and the 3.9s. He turned off the "fast write" and dropped the 8x to 4x in the bios on his n-force board, he hasn't had a problem since.

You guys would probably know more about what that has done to his performance. Have you heard of N-force and ATi cards not getting along? I'm a noob to ATi cards(for now :) ). Plan on getting an Asus 9800 XT as soon as they hit a sub-$500 price range.

I see, I understand, fair point, but I feel news is all about informing people. I posted the report, so if people wanted to, they could check it out, and if they didn't want to sign up, then no harm no foul. I feel it is better to give people the choice, over that of keeping them in the dark.

    Point taken though.

    Cheers:)
