ADSL and LAN Trouble

edited July 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi there,

I'm trying to connect three computers to our btbroadband adsl line thru a four port router, but i'm having some problems, it might not just be one problem.. but i think it best to list all the symptoms;

All terminals can access the internet but connecting to a page is VERY slow and randomly times out. (however if only one terminal is switched in things are fine).

Terminals one and two cannot access each others shared files, we have unique ip addresses, but i keep getting a "Terminal two is inaccessible" message.

Here's the wierd one, we can play games at the same time, the pings are a bit high, but it works okay. So why the problems with our internet browsers?

Thanks for reading... and PLEASE HELP I'm going crazy trying to sort this one.

ok lets start with the basics.

power on all the pc's and see if everyone can ping each other.
im not sure what OS your running, but ill assume ur running windows xp.

if so, please double check and make sure you dont have the MS firewall or ANY firewall app running on those terminals.

make sure all the terminals have unique computer names.

What OS are you using? What router are you using? Unique IP addresses? I have 2pc's on Ultra Broadband with a 4 port linksys router and am installing a 3rd & 4th soon. I have my router setup as follows First connect to your routers setup page with IE or whatever browser you use, then--Under Setup-- #1-- Wan connection type- PPPoE. #2-- DHCP is enabled. #3-- Under Advanced --Filters- SPI-disabled, Block WAN Request-enabled, Multicast Pass Through-enabled, IPSec Pass Through-enabled, PPTP Pass Through-enabled, Remote Management-disabled, Remote Upgrade-disabled, MTU-enabled & set to 1492. Next tab-Forwarding -don't change. Next tab-Dynamic Routing-Working Mode-check Gateway,TX-disabled,RX-disabled. Next tab-Static routing-select route entry-1, interface:LAN, everthing else in static routing should be zero's. Next tab- DMZ Host will set itself, no need to do anything there. And last MAC Addr clone is all zero's, no need to change anything there. OK,m Thats how mine is setup. Make sure your WAN port cable goes to your modem, and make sure there's no pc connected to the uplink port on the router. All your pc's should be connected to 1-4 numbered ports. You can renew your IP if you need to, by typing in the run box- CMD and it will bring up a dos window where you type in (ipconfig /renew) and hit enter. There's a space between ipconfig & /renew. And of course without the parentheses.
    Hope this helps.

High pings = normal for that amount of computers running online games at once.

When you have one PC connected, is it connected DIRECTLY to your ADSL connection or TO the router? It makes a difference.

Thanks everyone for such a response :)

Citrixmeta, we have unigue computer names, no firewall and can ping each other - we are all using XP Home.

Hawk, all the settings you mentioned are not on my router, but the ones that exist are the same as yours EXCEPT i am using PPPoA, I tried using PPPoE but the net just dissappeared so I'm back to PPPoA. The router - i quote the box "Full Rate ADSL Router" made by Mentor.

Versello, The pings are WAY too high, 1meg Broadband and two players on counter strike... i should not get lag i'm sure. When one computer is connected it works equally as well thru the router or directly into the adsl line.

Thankyou all SOOOOOO much :) I really do appreciate the help.

Is your router a combo router & modem? If not-- Are all your connections between them as I said? 1-4 numbered ports for pc's, WAN port goes to in port on modem, modem out port goes to ADSL connection. XP also has a network wizard that makes setting up the network automatic. Once you turn the pc on with the ADSL connected Win XP pops up the network wizard. It steps you through the process. You can delete your network and remake it easily to try different configurations.

I don't understand the unique IP addresses for each machine. I guess thats the PPPoA, or you configured your network that way. I have multiple pc's online and have only one IP. Your network setup is different than mine. Also, Very Important- You have to run the network wizard on each machine and set it up the same. After that you go into My Computer-- right click on any drive you want to share, and you'll see Sharing and Security, click that go in and check the box for (Share This folder). Which it will show the drive letter in the (Share ID box).

Some good news, I ran a virus checker on one of the terminals and found 60 thats six zero viruses on it. I simply don't beleive it. The internet appears to be running fine now, so i guess it was spyware and stuf. crazy...60.

My router is a combo router and modem, and it has four ports for pc's ond an rj11 out for ADSL (no uplink port), the ip addresses are assigned by the router and are sequential.

I have run the network wizard, but still no joy on getting terminals 1 and 2 to view each others files. When i go in my network places and view workgroup computers i can see the other terminal, as i said before i can even ping it, i just cant access the files :(

We have different IPs, different names, we've run the network wizard, file and printer sharing is enabled... whats the deal???

thanks again all. You're great :)

Here's a decent antivirus prog., with a small footprint on your pc. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php Runs in the background and it has free virus updating too. One other thing you might consider- Changing browsers on them. I'm pretty sure your pc's are using Internet Explorer, if you had that many viruses.
Here's a couple links to alternative browsers that are quite nice when you get used to them. http://www.opera.com/ & http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ and are not as suceptable to the trojan's or viruses that IE is.

Bruno, No problem man, glad to help. Even though I,ve thrown some overkill on you! Just trying to hit all bases. And the first one should have been are you running antivirus and have you scanned your system with spybot, adaware, cwshredder. LOL
Anyway, Here's a site for the users manual Mentor MR4A ADSL Router Integrated 4 port switch. It has all the installation, configuration etc. http://chatsoba.sprawl-vr.com/documents/MR4A/manualx.html. You didn't mention any type or model, so hopefully this is your mentor router.
And if you can't get it working properly here's a link that will help http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?DEPA=0&description=33-124-001&ATT=Network%20Routers%20Remote&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r, with free shipping.

Thanks once again for your help :)
I give in on our LAN trouble, but the ADSL problem is totally fixed, I hope other people read the history of this problem and find it helpful.
    Have fun all.
