re-start the computer question

edited July 2004 in Hardware
Hi why is it that when you install a program like office 2000 or corel 8 that you have to re-start the computer?? Some one was saying its because CPU has to do some thing and can't do it with Windows running or POST for some thing to happan ..

I can't find this in any computer book..

It has made modifications to the registry and other files that won't take effect until the next restart. It also generally has to modify files that are in use at the time of install. The reason you restart is to allow it to access these files before they are in use again.

So you have to restart computer so Windows can update and can't do it because system files in use so restart does this

Well not quite. Not a lot of software would need to replace or modify system files but certain things like DLLs need to be registered. While this could be done without rebooting its easier and safer to do it with a restart.

Also makes it easier for stuff that needs to use services and things like that.
