Netgear Switch just stops working...?

edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
Well I have a Netgear FS105 switch, and I haven't used it in about 6 months because I thought that it was broken. The problem I was having was that when plugged in, the power light would turn on, but it wouldnt work. (wouldnt transfer, act. lights didn't turn on, etc.) So anyway, I got it out the other day just to check if it was still broken, and it worked. So i've been using it for a few days, and today I was doing a xbox halo lan, and in the middle of the game, it just stops working again, same thing as before. So I'm thinking its overheating or something, because I unplugged it and let it sit for an hour, and now it works again. Any ideas on whats going on?

Sounds like it's overheating or it's just bunk. Either way, it's definately not normal and I would get it replaced.

sounds like typical netgear performance from personal experience. It's faulty.

I have a linksys wireless access point router (befw11s4). Same thing happened to me, it worked initially when I first bought it, but after a few days it decided it was going to just not work. The lights still blinked and all that, but no net access. So I just threw it into my pile of parts and went back to wired connections (on a netgear router). When I went back to college I brought the wireless router so I could maybe get some wirlessness going with my roommate via laptops and the problem persisted. We were able to fix the problem by simply upgrading the firmware. I would try that first, and if it continues to happen then do the entire replace / spend money thing.

    Good Luck.

Yeah, Its a switch though so it has no firmware to upgrade :( BUT it has been working for the last few weeks, then died again today, oh well. I checked on newegg.com and they have many inexpensive switches that'll work for me.
Funny you mentioned the linksys thing, as I just set up a wireless network today with a linksys BEFW11S4, but now the router works for the wireless part, but the switch part is hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, I'll try a firmware upgrade tomorrow *crosses fingers*

Does the router become excessively hot?

The router, no. The switch, yes
