eCommerce Web Application

Okay guys, I do some freelance webdesign on the side, and I have finally stumbled into the behemoth I have never encountered before: ecommerce. I am not talking about the little flappy-footed ecommerce where people are sending you credit card numbers and you put stuff in manually or any of that, my client wants the works. Shopping cart, credit card verification / billing, and all that. He just wants the money to drop into his account and for him to get an email with the order details in it and the address he needs to send it to.

Is anyone familiar with either a carrier for this kinda service that is relatively cheap, or a suite of programs that I can use for the shopping cart (opensource and free stuff <3ed). Any combination of anything. I am not knowledgeable in this area and I am having problems finding any definitive solutions.

Oh yea, I also need to be able to work whatever code is needed for this crap into my own design, none of the ecommerce stuff where you HAVE to pick a template and you get to have like 50 items. It needs to have a good deal of customibility and a ftp access for static pages and what not.

I can't help you however I can say that obviously you need it to be 100% secure for this kind of transaction. It'll probably be needing to run through php or asp backends. I would suggest perhaps starting to look through your local big bookstores I know there are a multi-tude of books on how to design such a site. Did I mention 100% secure last thing you want is for this kind of site to get hacked because of sloppy code.
