KT7A - Processors

edited December 2004 in Hardware
I know it's an old board and i should get a new one, but i was just wondering what the fastest processor you can get for this motherboard is. I've seen 1.8Ghz Durons kicking about, but is this the best i can get for it? Just trying to squeeze a little more life out of my ageing machine.

i think you could only go up to a 1.3ghz tbird. and that was only because of the 100fsb. or something like that. but i'm almost positive that it would only go up to a 1.3 tbird.

Depends on the mobo, I have an XP 1800+ running in a MSI KT7a chipset board.

I am running a 1400 on mine (KT7A-Raid) and it will go higher (XP 2000+ I think if you use a palamino) do the reserch though.

    Abit says:
    KT7A Rev.1.0 to 1.2: only Thunderbird to 1400MHz
    Rev. 1.3: also Athlon XP
I have two rev.1.3 with the latest bios and on both a thoroughbred XP2400+ is running without any problems.
Many owners of rev.1.0 to 1.2 report palomino or even t'bred XPs are running on their board, but it is always a question of tolerances with the different cpu interfaces.

Cheers guys, it's a VIA chipset i've got i think. I'll look at what i can get in the 1.4Ghz range.

Dude, the KT133a is a VIA chipset.....if you have a revision 1.3 board you will have no problem running a palomino core Athlon XP, I don't have any experience with trying t-breds though....apparently it works for some people. Either way you go you will be crippling your cpu with the sdram on that board. Like you said though, you will be adding a little bit more life to your system, and for that I salute you. Good luck!

    the kt7a runs with no problems a xp-m processor @2266mhz (133 x 17).
my own one goes 16 x 133 at the moment.

My 10year old daughter has the Abit KT7A-Raid v1.2 with the
AthlonXP 2000+ (1667 MHz) on it and has no problems since 2 years...

I have a plain jane KT7 here and someone has a 1.4 gHz/233 Athlon that they can give me. I know the base KT7 only runs 200FSB Athlons, but could I throw in that 233FSB, although only run it at 200FSB?

All you can do is try, maybe you get lucky and maybe you don't. Either way you won't hurt either the processor or the board. I had a KT7 too, and I don't think the fsb overclocked that well, so you probably won't be able to gain any of the chips original speed back that way. Maybe somebody here remember what the max muliplier on the KT7 is and you could change the chips multi to get close to 1.4. I have read posts where some people have gotten Athlon XP's to work in KT7's. I'm not sure, but I think the maximum multiplier is 13, so you might get at least 1.3 out of it. Nudge the fsb a little bit and you could get damn close to 1.4.

    Hi
God.... pre-historical motherboard i know but, in fact i need this information:
Where i can find which version is my motherboard? Is there any choice to see that through any software? If is a 1.3V can i use any Athlon XP processor?

I have a ABIT KT7A-RAID motherboard Bios updated
    AMD 1.1 Ghz processor
    Seagate 60Gb 7200rpm
    Samsung 160Gb 160Gb 7200
    1.5Gb Kingston 133Mhz memory
Voodoo 5500 64Mb graphic card (a month ago) and i bought a Chaintech Geforce FX 5600 128Mb...but there´s a problem with voltage... is there any incompatibility with some graphic cards?..
Creative Sound Blaster Live Player 5.1
    Windows XP Pro with SP2

There should be a little sticker somewhere on the board with the revision printed on it, if it isn't printed on the board itself right by the model. People have been able to use Athlon XP's on rev 1.2 boards also, so you could get lucky. It has been a while since I played around with non-ddr boards so don't take my word as gospel, but if you have a newer board revision you have a good chance of it working. Keep in mind though that you will probably need to find an Athlon XP with a palomino core, not a newer barton core. I don't know if anybody has gotten a thouroughbred or barton core running on such a KT133A chipset.
