nForce 3 chipset mod

I just wanted to share a little mod I just did.

I have an MSI K8N Neo Platinum w/ the nForce 3 250Gb Chipset. This is the combined north and south chipset design, so there is a lot of action going on w/ this chipset Action = HEAT!! This mobo has two temp sensors one for the CPU and one for the chipset (not system). My chipset was running about 46C - 48C. I overclock so I needed to take care of that heat.

I read on the MSI forums of some people finding an inadequate amount of thermal paste on their chipset heat sink. I took my heat sink off and sure as heck, one little dab in the middle!

I cleaned it up w some mineral spirits and applied a nice even layer of arctic silver 5, mounted a little fan that I got from an electronics dealer on it and sleeved the wires! VWALA!! 36 degrees Celsius!!!!! :jelly:

Now i got to put it thru some paces/benchies and see what it bought me besides more stability on the AGP bus. :p

HEH Heh heh!!! Its a CoolerMaster Hyper6 (heatpipe design). Had to modify the mounting bracket to get it to fit my mobo. ;)

No, it is a standard PCI/communication slot. An MSI optimized PCI slot for a WLAN + Bluetooth setup they have. What ever, i don't have any PCI card needs. Friggin everything is already integrated on this mobo! :)

I am hitting some road blocks, and not sure what the next step should be. Shalst we move to the OC section and continue? ;)

Now wait just a sec, you sure you arn't covering up a prescott with that heatsink, oh wait nevermind... Intel isn't advanced enough to optimize the fan placement on the side.

How easy are those clips to undo? Would I have to take the mobo out of my case? Dont want to do that till the weekend because I'm lazy and dont want to waste a day off doing anything productive. I did add a small(ish) fan and got the temp down to 30 degrees but if a blob of paste is going to send it down a bit more then I'm more than happy to try it out.

The clips are a bEOCH if you don't unmount the mobo. I have a mobo tray, and I still had to unscrew the mobo.
