Windows Won't Recognise My DVD & CD-R/RW Drives

I stupidly installed Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.0 on Windows XP, ignoring the warning that the program wasn't compatable with Windows XP. Windows disabled both my DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW drives, so I uninstalled Easy CD Creator. But, both drives were still disabled, so I went into the device manager and uninstalled the drives. I restarted Windows, and Windows "discovered" them, but they are still displayed with the little yellow exclaimation point, and this message appears in the properties window: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Can I do anything about this? I can't find the drivers anywhere online. If I install new burning software, will it provide the drivers that Windows needs?

By the way, the drives are:
  • JLMS DVD-ROM LTD-166s
  • Samsung CD-R/RW SW-240b

If anyone has these drivers, or has a solution to my problem, please reply!

Thanks,
taestell

Try installing real burning software like nero 5.5 or higher.

I found out that my problem was due to a known issue, which I was able to fix.

Now, my DVD and CD-R/RW drives can read discs. But, my CD-R/RW is not able to burn CDs. In burning software, I get the message "no compatable recordable or rewritable devices found on system." When I click directly on the drive in My Computer, I get the message "E:/ is not accessable. Incorrect function." What is wrong now?

Try installing different burning software it sounds like (and for the life of me I can't remember the file name) the file for burning isn't there.
