Linksys Router configuration page

edited August 2004 in Science & Tech
I recently got a Linksys 4-port Router (BEFSX41) and I wanted to take down the firewall that comes standard with it. To do this, you go to http://192.168.1.1, and it prompts you with the Username and Password to access the page. The default password is "admin" but it doesn't work for me. I have tried numerous things, such as resetting the router, using ADMIN, Admin, etc. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Do you leave the username blank?

Not sure why it wouldn't reset to factory defaults if you hit the reset switch... are you holding it down for a few seconds until the lights in the front flash?

yeah, for linksys stuff the default is always admin/admin. thats actually the first thing i tell people to change for home networking security, because so many people leave it on the defaults and have never even seen that page. but yeah, if its not admin/admin after its been set to defaults, i dont really know what to tell you. good luck and let us know how things go!

LinkSys routers don't use usernames for the admin console. D-Link, however, does.

when you say console, you are talking about the web based interface right? cuz my WRT54G definitely does. here is a screenie for it. also, i changed the ip to 192.168.1.5, so dont be fooled by that :D

oh, and also a possum :D

see, its funny, because i actually feel like i remember them not having usernames, so i checked it in all different browsers cuz i thought it might be a browser thing, but sure enough, it asked every time. maybe its the latest firmware or something that asks for the admin username?

For linksys the default set up is username (not password) is 'admin' and the password is blank.

    Oh well it doesn't matter.

As long as all combinations are tried (with username and without), one of them will work after a factory reset... unless teh router is ghey.

Yeah, I held the reset button until the lights flashed. I have a Linksys Wireless Access Point hooked up to the router, as well as a Linksys Wireless Signal Enhancer hooked to the WAP, could that change anything?

Drowd, I'm guessing when you change the username/password for the router, you have to first be at http://192.168.1.1? Is there no way to change the password otherwise?

Read it and weep it, girls. Page 14, ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrt54gv1.1_ug.pdf, "Leave the username field blank." Pawsome indeed ;)

Meekrob: The "signal enhancer" does not make a difference. It sounds like you possibly could have a defective router if resetting won't clear its nvram.

wow, so thats real funny, i just did some tests, and i first tried blank with my password and it worked. next i tried a username of "pawsome", and again, it still worked. it seems to me that this is a flaw, but i havent thought it out fully yet . . .

They must have changed it for the G's because on the 3 b's I have at work the default is all username:admin password:blank
