Service Pack 2 PROBLEM

ZecterZecter The coldest state in the Continental USofA
edited September 2004 in Science & Tech
I installed service pack 2 on my back up computer and when I start it it starts loading the XXX user (slowly by the way) then when the desktop picture appears the monitor goes on standby. Any thought into this, it is a big problem as I can't do anything with the computer anymore.

You could try booting up with the cd and doing the recovery route. Then not install Sp2 as it's got some issues.

So, is sp 2 going to be fixed eventually?

Hopefully. But M$ general response so far has been that SP2 is fine and that any issues are the responsibility of the various vendors and it's up to them to make their whatever compliant and correct to the SP2 standards. Which I agree with in theory becuase there is a lot of sloppy code out there that should be fixed. However in practice SP2 has been causing some critical errors that can make computers inopperable.

I've seen trouble like this before, manufacturers blame microsoft (which I agree with) and Microsoft blames the manufacturers, and so the consumer gets wound up in the whole losing mess.

One time it happened to me. Microsoft says the Compaq was to give me windows, Compaq said to use the recovery cd or get a windows cd from Microsoft. This is only one example though, of when Windows ME crapped up the already cruddy Compaq. Windows ME + Compaq = HORRIBLE DISASTER.

Anyway, now it looks like I HAVE TO REFORMAT (argh!!!) and maybe try sp 2 again???

Oh, and just to let you know, on both my machines it does not say Professional any more, just Windows XP on the splash screen. Is this happening with you? On one machine it did it instantly, the other (the one where sp 2 worked) took a few reboots to change.

One more thing, I never got that whole fw setup thing on the computer that failed with sp 2 that happens before you even see your users to log onto windows.

One more thing, do you think Microsoft will silently fix these problems?

I haven't started to install SP2 yet on any of my XP machines. To many problems and we are using VPN software that is particularly hard hit by the SP2 updates.

Sucks that you have to re-install. You should just scrap XP and go linux entirely :) That's actually what I'll probably end up doing at home I just need to get a bigger drive first. Granted I'll probably use vmware or something so I can run XP inside linux to keep the wife happy. But I don't play games on my PC really anymore so I no longer need winblows.

I think that you'll see windows putting out some updates to fix some of the problems (I believer there is already one or two already) but primarily if they stick to their guns it'll be down to the various soft/hard ware manufactures to clean up their code.

i installed sp2 on my machine at home and well it completely pissed me off. not only did i have random lockups but the whole new automatic update didn't fly. i'm fine with sp1a, haven't had a problem with it yet that i can identify.

it all depends on what hardware and software you are using with it.

? for all of you, does anyone notice that their "Professional" or "Home" name disappeared on the splash screen?

yes, im guessing thats one of the effects of sp2, it makes windows xp generic i think.

wasn't sp1 easier than sp1a? It came with java right, so you don't have to mess with the add on sun java, anyone know a place to get that? (just for the file keeping)

Okay, I have now installed both a home and and pro version of xp and the same monitor standby problem occurs. I am beginning to think its something in the hardware configuration of the hardware, because this same computer also acts up with a certain video card that works on every other computer I've tested it on. Also note this is a compaq that has been probably 70%+ replaced with new parts.
