PS Recommendations

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Slowly starting to gather pieces to build my new comp a little at a time. Figure I'm gonna go ahead and get the power supply in the next few days along with some other stuff.

I'm building an A64 rig for reference, and gonna be using a Geforce 6800 GT OC which should be here today !

I'm looking for something around the 500 watt range just so it should last me a good time with upgrades in the future. Anyone have any recommendations as to good quality/price? I don't overclock or anything like that so I don't need anything fancy.

I'd like to get it from Newegg too as I get all my parts from there. The one that looked interesting and had a nice price I saw was:

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or things I should specifically look for/not look for. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion Mackanz. I'm just curious though if it would be worth it for me to spend the extra 30 bucks on the one you suggested. Like I said I don't do any overclocking, just looking for a stable PS that will suit my needs. Have you heard anything bad about the one I mentioned ?

Well, i think of a psu as the heart of a computer system. With the newest technology, a good psu is a must. I haven't heard anything at all from the one you linked to, and it might be good. However, i usually go for the well known brands when it comes to important gear in a system. The price of the Fortron psu is actually very cheap if you consider what you get. I can tell you one thing, it beats the crap out of psu's well over $150. And it's silent as well, at least i can't hear it, not even on a watercooled rig. I used to have another good psu before, the Antec 400. But it's like night and day compared to this one.

Thanks for the words Mackanz. I think I might just go with the one you recommend. You are right as the PSU is the heart of the system. And I have personally run into problems in the past with PSU's dying on me and not giving me sufficient voltages for the mobo. I actually had to buy a new one when I upgraded my computer last time, simply because it wasn't providing correct voltages and I kept getting warnings.

So I'll take your advice. It would suck to try and save 30 bucks and end up with something that might not be up to par with what I need. Thanks again.

    Lianad,

You won't regret it at all. I have mesured all the voltages with a multimeter and they where perfect. I do the occasional overclock as well. Top choice!
