MSI Nforce3 or K8t800 ??

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Just wondering if anyone has opinions one way or another on these motherboards. I don't really see a lot of differences, the Nforce is more expensive but it seems the K8T has more features unless I'm missing something.

The K8T seems to have 4 memory slots, 8 channel audio, 4 SATA, 3 IDE which is all more/better than the Nforce version so I'm confused as to why the Nforce is more expensive. These are the 2 I'm looking at:

MSI "K8T NEO2-FIR" VIA K8T800 Pro Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-463&depa=1

and

MSI nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Athlon 64 Socket 754 CPU, Model "K8N Neo Platinum" (MS-7030)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-457&depa=1

Some opinions would be great as I can't make up my mind !

Thanks!

Edit: An added question, it seems one is socket 939, and the other socket 754 ? But both are AMD 64 compatible. So what is the deal there? I'm gonna be getting an AMD 64 3200+, what kind of socket is that ?

Well what is the difference between socket 754 and 939? I'm still confused about that as they both support the same processors AMD 64. I even looked at processors and saw some 64's 939 and some 754, so I'm wondering even more now wtf the difference is or what I want to go with.

Also before I understood all 64 3200+'s had 1meg cache. It appears now they only have 512kb cache. (which sucks!) It seems Newegg does sell 1meg cache versions but they are OEM (no biggie). I'm assuming its a big difference and worth it to get the 1meg cache OEM version ?

socket 939 is for the FX processors. the 754 is for all the other 64bit ones (execpt for the socket 940)

socket 939 take regualr A64 processors to not just the fx. there is not much performance increase since i have a socket 939 3500+ system right next to me and i still pwn it. main diff is 939 is dual channel mem

socket 754 is the original 64 socket, and only has a single channel memory controller.
socket 939 is exactly the same as 754 except it has a dual channel memory controller.
socket 940 is for optron's and FX processors.

You will have to choose a socket type and then get the apropriate mobo.

I have a 754, but I would have gone 939 if they weren't so expencive.

get the 1Mb cache if you can, but don't sweat it if you can't. ;)

    Lianad,

Does it have to be an MSI board? I have grown allergic to MSI in the past, so my comments may not be that objective, but there are at least 2 or 3 better boards for A64.
From the benchmarks i have seen (and i have seen a lot now), a 1mb cache Clawhammer S754 cpu is very close to a 512kb cache S939 cpu clock for clock. The only difference is that the S939 cpu's have dual channel memory which gives about 3% extra. The big problem right now though is that there are not that many S939 boards that works good. I think the bios engineers are struggling to get things working ok.

If i where you and if you are in the market for a A64 and a board, i would buy a 1mb S754 and the new DFI Lanparty S754 board. Note that there are very few 1mb Clawhammers left. I know a place who have them though.

Doesn't have to be an MSI board Mackanz, I just heard nothing but good things about the MSI K8T Neo boards here on the forum and I trust these guys ! I'm about to post my final purchase list in the general forum, take a look and let me know if all looks good.

Abit board man. Ive been running 64 bit cpus longer than anyone here and i am telling you the abit is superior than the msi better ocing and more stable
