Major PC Problem Please Help

edited September 2004 in Hardware
Yesterday I was using my computer and trying to steam some audio from the internet when the screen went blank, it started making strange noises, and everything stopped responding. I restarted it but it wouldn't boot. (I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on a home built computer that's about 2 years old with an AMD Athlon XP 1900+. When I restart it gets to the welcome screen and shuts down giving me the blue screen saying an error: "STOP:0x0000008E90xC0000005,0x8060AB13, xF9BA1A64, 0x00000000). It says it shut down to prevent damage and did a physical memory dump. I have plenty of diskspace and my BIOS is the version that was on the motherboard when I got it. After the computer wouldn't start in Safe Mode, I checked the PC Health in the BIOS and found it running way too hot at CPU Temp. of 129F or 54C and System Temp. of 93F or 34C. After shutting down the computer I opened it up and found that my intake fan on the front of the case wasn't working because it was hung up on a screw attached to it. I fixed this and got the fan working. The fan is warped from hitting the screw and makes a wierd noise, so I have to get a new one. When I started up the computer again the temperatures dropped a lot, back to normal levels. Though its cooler the computer still shuts down right after I get to the welcome screen in any boot mode. I was wondering whether I possibly fried something in the computer or whether the software confinguration is just screwed up.
Any advice or suggestions is appreciated and if anyone has any questions about the situation please ask. Thanks for your help.

Try restarting your pc-- then hold down the F8 key-- it will give you a list of choices for restarting- start in safemode,-start in safemode w/networking, etc--pick- [start with last known good configuration]. Let us know your results. If you had fried anything it wouldn't be running, so I think you might be ok there.

Thanks for the reply Hawk and Go Cowboys! I've tried starting the computer in all of the different modes and nothing works. Should I try to reinstall Windows XP? A guy I know had suggested that during the period without the fan the CPU fried, but would that prevent my computer from even getting to the welcome screen? I wish I had a AMD CPU to try in the computer. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

54c isn't that hot for an athlon xp. i had an xp 2000+ that would run at 54c idle and 60c full load.

Instead of reinstalling, you might try a repair. Haven't done it in such a long time- I'm not sure of the steps on it. Maybe one of our members can guide you, if they've done it lately. Do you have anyone you can borrow a cpu from, to test the system? That would be the ideal thing to do, if you can. As far as temps go- Your in good shape. I'm on my wifes pc which has an Asus A7V MB, AMD T-bird 1900 and the temp runs 62C to 72C depending on how much load I put on it. T-Birds run hot. It's never overheated and shutdown though.

I don't really have anyone to borrow a CPU from, unless I took it to a computer store where they would charge me. I'll try to repair Windows to see if I have a software problem. Just wondering what should you set the emergency shutdown temperature for in the BIOS, maybe around 80c or something? Thanks for the replies.

Could someone please give me directions on how to repair Windows XP? I tried to do it and went through the repair stage and got to the part with the adminstrator password. I have no idea what that is or if there is one so I left it blank and hit enter and the C:/Windows came up and I don't know what command to put in. Thanks.

the way i know how to repair windows xp is it pretty much just puts a fresh xp on. you have to re-intall all critical updates. how you do that is you keep on going through the setup like normal untill you come to previous OS installed screen. or when you choose what drive/partion to put windows xp on. when you at this screen you should be able to hit the "r" button and it'll start the repair process.
