Up and Coming Double Layer HD DvD's

edited October 2004 in Hardware
Hey everyone,
I've just got a question thats been bothering me for the past couple months. Now i've tried looking on the net but i failed to dig up any information about when Double Layer DVD players are coming to the market. Now I know that Double Layer DVD burners are out but I can't find any information about players. I have a 65" HDTV and I just wanted to know when i could be expecting the dvd2 players such as Blu Ray, etc. I've seen the difference on a regular movie compaired to a movie in HD. It just makes a world of difference. My best ball park guess was going to be this fall but I haven't seen anything.
Thanks

i believe they are already on the market. as far as my experience goes, when people refer to "double layer dvd's" they are just refering to the dvd9 disks, which hold approximately 9 gigs as opposed to the dvd5's which hold about 5 gigs (slightly less, actually). and also, as far as i understand it, your standard dvd players will play dvd5, and dvd9. its just the dvd9 or dual layer burners that are less common and used to be more expensive. i just picked up a 16x NEC burner that does dual layer for 75 bucks at new egg. now, the dvd9 media is much less common and typically fairly expensive. most retail dvd's are on dvd9 media, which is why programs like dvd shrink are common and popular because it will compress the images to fit on a dvd5. hope that helps :D

This does help thanks guys...I do have another question now.. With my dvd player...it only reads dvds are 480i or 480p(with a normal dvd in it)....Now with a Dual Layer dvd inside my dvd player will it automatically become 1080i? or what? b/c i'm confused on this.. how do I get my dvd player I have right now to read High Definition DVD Movies or do i have to buy other equipment to get this HD results. The dvd player is a Harman Kardon.
    Thanks for the help

From what I understand your dvd player will probably read it and then one of two things will happen. It'll either get dropped down to regular definition or it'll broadcast at HD and if your tv isn't HDTV it won't be able to accept the signal.
