Audigy 2 Digital Out ?

Okay, something that I have been wondering about for a while now, is what use is the digital out jack on the audigy 2 for? What kind of cable actually plugs into it, and what could I then plug it into. Isn't the standard for digital output either optical or coaxial? It seems almost like Creative labs almost intentionally made this jack useless.

digital out is for some recording equipment. But I also think there are some creative or logitec 6.1 systems that use digital out. Generally though yeah, it's pretty useless.

I have the audigy 2as well, are you talking about the one on the pannel or the one on the card its self (SPDIF). Ive used the digital out on the pannel for recording digitaly but really you dont need it uless you are going to be doing some serious recording.

it's not proprietary, just not used for most commercial sound reproduction systems.

All I'm saying is that it would be nice to have a digita jack on the soundcard itself to connect to digital speakers....without having to resort to having cables run from the platinum bay on the front of my computer....

Unless I'm mistaken... I use the digital out on my SB Audigy to connect to my 4.1's. Instead of having 2 cables (front and back audio) I use only 1 in the digital port. If you use 5.1's I think you have to use 3 cables. Unless it is different than my 5.1 headphones.

That is the only digital out I know of unless there is some other digital out that I'm not aware of. If so please don't flame me because it will make me feel retarded. :P

I won't flame you, I've been trying to figure out what to use it for forever. Is there a special cable you use. I am still using old Cambridge soundworks DDT2500 digital speakers (creative labs), and there is no digital cable that runs directly from the soundcard to the speaker except the coaxial, and that only works from the platinum drive. I'm not losing any sleep over it, it's just I've been shopping for some nice speakers and I hoped I might find something that would use that jack. Thanks for replies everybody.

I dont have a PC speaker system and connect my PC to my Sony A/V receiver using my Audigy's SPDIF. Also, the SPDIF output is usually used for the sub/center channel in analog mode on Creative cards.
The rule of thumb is: If you connect your sound card to other equipment that has analog and digital inputs, you should use digital, since the other equipment will usually have better D/A converters than your sound card, which means better sound quality.

    I concur, Mr. Badger Badger!
