DOS partition on XP Home laptop

I've a friend who wants to use a CNC lathe program that runs in DOS on his XP Home laptop. It's an HP laptop - don't know the model or if it has one of those hidden partitions containing the OS.

Can he add a partition to the drive and install 95, 98 or DOS? Then choose which to boot into.

If so what is the easiest way to do it? Can it be done in XP or will he have to use third party software? Will it screw up the data on there or just shuffle it about?

I feel it should be possible but don't know how to go about it.

Many thanks,

Phil

Back up the data first, then repartition the drive so that there is a small one at the start of the drive, and put Windows 9x or DOS on that. Then (and this being second is crucial) install Windows XP on the other partition. The system will present you with a choice of which one you want to start after that.
