Dual Layer, Blu Ray- AAGH!

edited November 2004 in Hardware
Ok heres how I feel about the current selection of dvd burners. you got your dual layer burners-to which the blanks are expensive as heck!. I dont see the benefits of getting dual layer if the media is so expensive with that you also have blu ray coming out soon which promises to be better than dual layer! Should i just stick with my ordinary liteon 4x dvd burner? :loco:

Well, I've been waiting and waiting... for the blue rays at least. I would vote to wait, but then again, I like things cheap, I havn't paid more than 20 bucks for a cd burner, and not more than 2 dollars for a 100 pack of GOOD (name brands) blank cds. If you already have a dvd burner I wouldn't worry about dual layer, its just not a big enough upgrade to be worth it.

Depends on what you want the burner for. If it's just for backing up your data then dual/layer blue ray is the way to go. If however you want to be able to make dvd's that play in other machines (dvd players, xbox, etc) then there is no point in getting blue ray as the media isn't compatible.

hmmm... that gives me something to say.

if you need to copy things to play other machines maybe you could just get double sided, not dual layered dvds, or are those not sold as blanks?

I've never seen anywhere double sided blanks. I don't think it can be done because of the way blank media is made.

But for that matter double sided media has to be flipped over anyway so you might as well just use two discs. It'd probably be cheaper anyway then double sided media if it existed.

My suggestion is to wait until the dual layer media becomes cheaper, that's what I'm doing.
When it comes to movies, dual layer media is great. If you ever had to shrink a movie to 50% picture quality because of the limited space, you know what I'm talking about. BluRay/HD-DVD media wont be important until the actual movie DVDs hit the market.
