xbox live problems...

I just bought Halo 2 and I am trying to set up XBox Live so I can play online. My network setup is a little ghetto so bear with me please.

I have a DLink DI-524 802.11g router downstairs connected to the cable internet. My computer upstairs is connected wirelessly. My XBox is also upstairs. My computer has an extra ethernet port since I use a wireless card.

Basically, I want to connect the XBox to that ethernet port so it can connect to the internet. I have heard that this is possible using ICS, but I can't seem to get it to work. The XBox usually says, DNS cannot be found or DHCP services not found. I am using a standard ethernet cable (not crossover), could this be the problem?

If you know how to make this work, could you please give detailed instructions. Thanks very much for the help.

If you're going from XBox to PC, then yes, you need a crossover cable.

turn on ics on the pc, then use a crossover cable to connect the xbox to the pc. on the xbox, you'll have to use the PC's ethernet card's IP address as the gateway address.

Doesn't ICS assign IP addy's? I forget, as I dislike it so, and I haven't used it in quite some time.

I'm assuming he doesn't want to run a CAT5 cable through two floors.

    Oh yeah good point.

Ok in that case cross-over cable and ICS should get it working.

The other option is to get a wireless network adapter for your xbox.

You dont have a modded xbox do you? I heard that m$ is banning people from live if they detect a mod chip installed. I wouldnt think you would get this kind of an error, but who knows.

If you are baned from live you get a completely different error.

OK thanks guys. I am making a crossover cable today so I should be up an running tonight. I would just buy an wireless ethernet adapter, but they are like $130. ICS is free. Thanks for the help a lot.

I also have my xbox connected through a cross-over cable to my comp, which is wirelessly connected to the linksys router upstairs. I can't for the life of me, get it to work though. I get the same error on my xbox, No DNS server addresses blah blah.... any ideas?

have you tried manually editing your network settings in your xbox and plugging in ip gateway dns etc...?
  • edited November 2004
Okay I made some progress. I can get my xbox to configure the IP and to reslove the DNS, but when the final step (connect to xbox live) it just says "communication error." Could not connect to xbox live.

can you now ping your xbox from your computer? If you can then everything is set up correctly. I wonder if perhaps xbox live is using some sort of oddbal protocal that won't work through ICS.

Okay I finialy connected to Xbox live. Here is what you have to do:

    1. BRIDGE your the wireless internet connection and your local area connection that your xbox is hooked up to. (this means you will have to turn off Internet connection sharing for the connection that is connected to the internet)

    2. Obvioulsly make sure that all connections are set to obtain IP's and DNS automaticly.

    3. Foreward the following ports on your wireless router.
    UDP 88
    UDP 3074
    TCP 3074

And after I did all those things, the xbox just connected to xbox live. I think the problem we ran into was we were trying to set up ICS to make the connection work, when all we needed to do was turn off ICS and bridge the connections. Let me know if this did not work for you cause the was some other settings I messesd with that I am not sure if you need to do or not.

I have a pretty much identical setup as you guys. I did everything said in the above post but it seems that I am constantly being disconnected from Xbox live at about intervals or 3-4 minutes. Its very odd because I am able to reconnect immediately afterwards when it happens one or two times but after that my computer displays the connection on my NIC as not connected and i have to restart my computer. I've tryed a lot of things and nothing works. I'm sure it has something to do with the network bridge setup as I've tested this with a straight patch cable to my router and it works fine. My setup is as follows: D-link DI-7124P+ wireless router, D-link DWL-G520 wireless pci card, on-motherboard NIC, cross over cable, xbox. That is the order of my network with my modem being connected to the router with a standard patch cable. My xbox is configured to a specific ip address within my router's DHCP and uses the same DNS as my computer (the only way it could connect without an ip address conflict with my computer). I also enabled the ports specified above. -Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

check to see if you have any inactivity/timeout/reconnect setting in your router and make sure they are set to never time out and auto-reconnect. Also Sounds like you are setting a static IP to your xbox inside of your DHCP range. That's generally a no no. If you are giving your xbox a static IP it should be outside of the DHCP range.

Also are you using any of the M$ firewall features? If so get rid of them they are most useless and cause more issues then they correct. Also if you are behind a router they are completely redundant and a waste of time.

I set my xbox's static ip outside of the DHCP range (DHCP is 192.168.0.1-140, set the xbox to 192.168.0.150). However I couldnt find any setting on my router to change inactivity and such. Heres the emulator of my router client if you'd care to check that out and notice anything that would help the problem: http://support.dlink.com/techtool/di714P+/Emulator/hwiz.htm. All the performance settings are the default ones you see in the emulator. I also changed the power settings on my NIC to allow the network adapter to be awoken by connected devices. <p>After tweaking a lot of things related to power and router settings I connected to xbox live and still the same problem- i got disconnected within about 5ish minutes of connecting. By the way, when I'm disconnected from xbox live I'm still able tosruf the internet fine with my computer that the xbox is bridged to. I also disabled all windows firewall related things when I got SP2 so I'm fine there. I'm stumped. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

In the WAN options set your MTU to 1457. Everything else should be the default settings.

I set the mtu to 1457- it worked for about 10 minutes then disconnected like before. However this time immediately after being disconnected there was notice in my toolbar that my local area connection connected at 100.0mbs(usually when I'm xbox live it shows it as disconnected- it says the cable is unplugged. Unless i restart my computer, it always shows it as disconnected so this was a major change.) I'm still clueless as where to proceed. -Thanks
