Heh, I took a near identical screenshot when the portal exploded. When it went "BOOM", then time froze, I was like "OMIGOD SCREENSHOTSCREENSHOT!!!!11$@."
LOL Versello I did the same shit. I actually tried to hit it so fast I ended up hitting like 5 other keys before hitting the F5 lol.
I think the game was awesome, although relatively short (3 nights played = finished). For me it didn't really live up to what I had hoped for though, and in a sense, didn't even really feel like Half Life. I still don't even really understand the whole story, and I thought the ending was a piece of shit to be honest. I felt myself playing through the game the whole time wondering "what the fuck am I doing? where am I going? why am i going there? what am I trying to accomplish here?"..
Granted the game still rocked hard core, I was just a little disappointed. I thought the graphics were great, but there was a lot of low-res textures on surfaces like walls and such that when you got close looked like ass (even with max settings). Was kinda disappointed with that. Think they coulda done more with bump mapping and new shaders as well, wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be visually.
The voice acting though and the character acting I thought was the best ever in a video game. The acting was actually "real", the lip syncs, the animation, the eye movements, it was all totally real and I really felt like I was in a movie in that sense. Bad ass stuff..
ALso PISSED there is no multiplayer. I LOVED the original HL multiplayer with the fucking trip mines and such. I think multiplayer with this engine would ROCK. Also imagine being able to set up those drone guns in multiplay ? That would be bad ass. Kinda almost like sentry guns in TFC...
Overall great game, just didn't live up to my expectations unfortunately. Also, did anyone else notice the sound effects kinda sucked? I'm wondering if it is just my onboard 6 channel audio that makes it sound bad. The music rocked, the voices rocked, but explosions and shit just sounded "flat" and the whole time I was wondering if that is what they were supposed to sound like or if my audio card was fucked. (double checked and have the latest drivers). Oh well.
Now we just have to wait for HL3 and maybe finally we'll get a little more of the story and understand what the fuck is going on. In the first HL it all pretty much made sense, and at the end with the G-man you were left kinda "huh"?? To me the whole time in HL2 I was like "huh?", "who the fuck is this g-man" "why the fuck am I in city 17?" "why the fuck was i brought here?" and then the ending, I was like you gotta be fucking kidding me, no explanations what soever, just another cliff hanger
I just cant see what took them so long with such a short game. One of the coolest features of the game (Havok physics) comes from a 3rd party so most of the work would have been done by someone else.
The single player is VERY short, there is no multiplayer, and CS:Source contains a lot of ported maps, identical gameplay and pretty much nothing else.
The original Half Life took me MONTHS to complete, I've only gotten through it 2 or 3 times since buying it all those years ago. I feel quite cheated to be honest. What I will say though is that the game is a lot of fun and I enjoyed every minute of it, till the ending. The last level felt rushed and was not at all challenging. You run through the level hitting chargers every few seconds and smacking the mouse button whenever you see soldiers. I didnt even have to work out what to do at the end of the game, where with the big baby guy of the originall it took me quite some time to work out what to do.
Nothing with Half Life 2 was memerable, but I still think about my favorite parts of Half Life 1. I wanted more of that, but what we got was just some sick joke in comparison.
The atmosphere is really what drew me into this game. As someone else said, you really feel for the struggle of the citizens of City 17. You feel like you're one of them. You feel like you're on their side.
Rapture, I agree with you about the last level. It DID feel rushed. You can tell that they just wanted to get this thing done already. The first few levels were so deep and so huge, and the last level was mostly a roller coaster ride. The ending felt cut short.
Still, I have to admit it is probably the coolest game I've ever played. I really got wrapped up in the story.
I was wondering why I was in some eastern european country when I wanted to be killing aliens and going back to Black Mesa to see what they did with the place while I was gone. There is a line in there where Eli Vance says something like "Lets get you out of that suit and into a white coat" I was thinking yay! Half Life time, no more of this save the poor downtrodden people crap.
Then you go outside and play with the thing they coded to show off the physics engine.
It would have been better as a whole new game, its not Half Life, its something else. Its a cracking game though, I highly recommend it to anybody that has a rig big enough to push it along.
i just picked up the game. all i have to say is OMFG. it has some kick ass graphics. even my 9600se can play it almost maxed out. everything set to high and 6xAA. i was very impressed with all the detail and just graphics in general. gameplay is also kickass. i can thow stuff at people... how cool is that?

While I tend to agree, Half-Life 2 is more like an ongoing story that unfolds as you play it. You're not told what's going on like traditional games. Same goes for the original Half-Life. I haven't played the expansions, do I don't know how it really affects the series.

Don't want to spoil anything, but towards the end something happens.
