I am riunning it on a reg leadtek 6800 and it maxed and no lag at all. it gorgeous. I dont see a reason to spend more for the GT or Unltra. Stay away from any ati's except the x800 xt

Thats a pretty silly comment, especially since he wants to play Half Life 2.

exactly. Ive played HL2 on the x800 pro and it doesnt justify the money. Ive also played Hl2 on the 6800 Gt and Ultra still doesnt justify the money. Nvidia won this round of video cards hands down EVEN in Hl2

I cant really agree with you on that one, I honestly think a Radeon 9800 is pretty much all Half Life 2 needs...
Going for an Nvidia card of the same generation and price range would be a bad idea.

no doubt in that gen Nvidia sucked but in the current generation nvidia pwns ati not buy much but they still are ahead

so why is that a reason to stay away from ATI? HL2 runs very nicely maxed with full AA/AF on my X800 pro, thank you...

lol, yep, an x800 pro definately isn't a "bang per buck" card. it more like a "i have money to blow" card. a 6800nu i think would have one of the best "bang per buck" cards IMO. around $280 for a card that will out perform a 9800. good deal i'd say. also, if you can unmask the pipes and shaders successfully, that really takes up the "bang per buck"

i had a 9800xt bought the leadtek 6800 OMG i just beat HL2 like 5 min ago what a great game and works wonderfully! But hte performance increase from the 9800xt to 6800 is HUGE

spluh, they're not in the same line. The performance jump from a 5950 ultra to an X800 pro is ALSO "HUGE".

I have a 9800Pro/128 (sapphire), which is around $200 now.... The game runs beautifully. I have 2xAA and 2xAF with all settings at high and the game runs flawlessly.

Do not buy an Nvidia card unless its a 6800 series
  • edited November 2004
Sorry I posted this somewhere else already but I am in love with the price and as it's an overclockable 6800 (it's just the leadtek one that you can find oc everywhere on the web but released without goodies!!!!) - http://www.lowestonweb.com/Products/DisplayInfoMain.asp?e=3633B7C0-E08A-44B6-B583-8A8D0253C1B2

    agreed,

see the big difference between the 5900's and 9800's and the X800 and 6800 series is that the 6800 and X800 have the capacity to run Antialiasing on full blast anistropic filtering and all that other wonderful stuff turned up in games like HL2, DOOM3, etc. So thats something you need to look into as well if u are the guy that turns all those features on then ya go nuts get urself an 6800 Ultra cuz if u play it by the numbers the only card out there that beats the 6800 Ultra is the X800XT Platinum I think its called and that card is just 2 much money.

read benchmarks cuz these threads are going back and forth with ppl arguing for their fav brand personally i prefer ATI thats just preferences cuz at the time when the 5900's and 9800 were out the 9800 was THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK.

    my 2 cents,

Personally, I'm in the middle - I'd take either company, but I don't like it when people use a faulty premise to rip into one or the other company.

if you want BANG for the buck, 5900XT's are cheaper than most 5700 ultra's and will stomp them into dust.
They also keep up well with 9800 pro's and pretty much surpase the 9600XT's. They usually go for 150-220 depending on which one you want, and they can be flashed to Ultra speeds. Those are the best bang for the buck at the moment, of course i am disregarding most new video cards, since the cheapest ones run from 250 up to 700 bucks.
But if you are looking into newer Cards, i would say that the 6800 is the best bang for the buck. 128mb 6800, as said previously works great.
