Bios upgrade didaster?

edited November 2004 in Hardware
I find myself in a bad situation, mabe someone can help.... I have a hp computer. Downloaded their bios update, followed the instructions to create a disk. Rebooted with the disk. The screen says "Ready to flash BIOS for one of the models listed...(mine is on the list) OK to proceed? (Y/n) I chose Yes. The screen then says "Updating bios.... The PC will restart when the programming is done..." The cursor is flashing constsntly, and the floppy drive light is on constantly as well. It has been this way for 1 hour now. no other activity.... I am afraid to restart or anything.... I dont want to loose the board.... Help!

if it never actually said it was flashing, it probably didn't do any flashing. Best advice I ever got in this regard was DON'T FLASH FROM FLOPPIES. Make a tiny FAT32 partition, boot from a floppy, and flash from HD. Floppies are notorious for having bad sectors at bad times.

Restart the system, and if it works, great, if not, try a CMOS reset using the jumper, if that fails, screwed up BIOS. Nothing you can really do about it, unless the system has a backup BIOS or boot routine.

ok I think I have this figured. I made a small partition and unzipped the flash bios update there. I have booted from floppy. All is well so far..... I need a comand line to flash from this new partition.....
    Can anyone help with this?

same thing as the flash from floppy, except do it from the partition...

type the letter of the partition (most likely C) colon enter to get onto it...

    e.g. C: [enter]

Thank you lordbean, this forum is great. Flashed the bios update perfectly. I will never use a floppy again. ..... Cheers, Glenn T
