I recently visited the site www.somethingawful.com ..great site, been there many times before. this time, i got a popup message box that said "welcome to mah homepage" and redirected to what appeared to be a 12 year old girls website. both my CD drives popped open and my firewall went nuts with attempted connections.
i restarted my computer, with the network cable unplugged. when i reconnected the cable with my firewall up, more connection requests. i tried release/renewing my IP to foil any attackers, ran a virus scan with the latest virus definitions, nothing. heres the weird part:
99% of the connection attempts are coming from (or appear to come from) my local subnet. I'm in a college dorm at Rice University, and we have a subnet that is only for my dorm, and most of the attacks can be traced to individual machines on our local network in rooms downstairs. none of the actual owners of those machines know anything about this. the rest of them appear to come from random IP's and I have no idea whats causing it. Its been about a week now and I still get at least 6 connection attempts a day. any ideas?
