Can anybody help me with reformatting?

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi Guys,
My brother has purchased himself a new computer off the internet and, well its secondhand as they dont have the income to purchase a new one (they can't get credit either). When the computer arrived we found it had a copied version of Windows XP Pro on it, which had been placed over the original OS rather than blowing away the original. However it doesn't stop there, after a while of using the computer it started to refuse to recognise any of the drives. Now a friend of a friend offered to blow the computer away and reinstall a legal version of windows xp pro for us (he apparently fixes computers for a living) which he kindly did. And after getting it back from him and several long phone calls of 'now just got to xxxx, and click on xyz' we finally got the computer working. But i think because we loaded a cracked version of kazaa on the computer (at my sisters request) as she wanted kazaa lite not the normal one but didnt want to pay for it. This resulted in several trojans being detected and our virus checker (AVG) promptly deleted them with no problems, but now the computer now refuses to log onto the internet and sometimes even refuses to recognise the modem. We have tried changing the settings etc but to no avail. Now if i reformat the computer will this solve the problem as i think AVG has deleted some precious files (although most of the trojans were found in the temporary files). And can somebody please tell me how to blow away the computer and re-install windows xp.
Please please help me, its starting to frustrate me beyond belief.
Many Thanks Guys.

once you have it on cd, stick it in your computer
go into the setup or bios (usually hit the Delete key right when it's booting)
set the "boot sequence" to boot from the cd rom (you'll find it somewhere in the bios options)
windows will enter setup, just follow the directions *make sure you read them all*
hit enter when it asks you if you want to repair windows or install new, you want it new!
of course, once windows is up and running you'll need to install 4in1 drivers and video drivers along with other you may have like a sound card or something

any specific questions you have feel free to ask them.

    good luck!
