Is there a difference between a usb 1.1 or 2.0 cable?

I think most retailer usb 2.0 cables are gold plated. That's what the guy at best buy told me, but I wouldn't take his / our advice.

Yeah, there's a huge difference: The marketing department slaps a "hi speed" or a "2.0" logo on the package, and the price doubles. It's amazing.

Actually I was reading that the 2.0 has finer strand wire inside for better transfer speeds. (in a nutshell)

i did some mad google searching and basically found that any cable with the A-B connectors on it are 2.0 compliant.

the cable that came with my USB 2.0 mp3 player is exactly the same as the one that came with my USB 1.1 digital camera... i haven't seen any slow down in speed using either cable

Basically the standard has been set for cables exactly the same. A 1.1 cable (assuming it was up to spec) would carry USB 2.0 speeds no problem. The more expensive USB 2.0 cables are GP'd and probably good quality .... but they're probably overkill. The worst that'll happen if you use a 1.1 cable is that you won't get as near to the theoretical max as you could with a better cable.

The difference in the USB standards is in the timing (that's why you need a repeater for long cable runs - the timing gets out of sync over a long cable). USB 2.0 has faster timing, but is still basically the same level signal. It'll work fine with any decent USB cable.

As prime and Al alluded to, gold plating, etc, falls into the same rip-off category as insanely expensive speaker wire. Hey, it's GOLD, it must be better, right?!

No differnace. I use an orange extention cord with USB connectors on it...I works just fine. Now if only I could get my power saw to run on USB....mmmm
