xbox live and linux networking

OK, I started a thread earlier about wanting to connect my xbox to my pc and use ICS to get online via WiFi. I have a crossover cable and I have followed numerous instructions to no avail. I have come to accept that Windows networking sucks ass. Since I am dual booting with slackware linux as well, I think it would be good to set up my linux install to serve my xbox.

Basically, I just want to make my xbox think the linux pc IS the router or IS the internet. I want to be able to boot into linux and just have the xbox work. I am guessing I will need to install a server or something, but I actually have absolutely no idea how to do networking in linux. Thank you for any help.

Is there a reason you just don't save yourself a hell of a lot of headache and just get a router?

he enjoys bondage sex perhaps? well dude, all i can say is if you don't know linux networking, you're gonna be at this for a long time. it's not impossible and it actually is probably quite easy, but for a noob, ouch. i'd actually recommend you look into one of those dedicated firewall distros like clarkconnect (i use it) or smoothwall, there are others also. the easy and clean way would be to get a wireless router and a for the xbox get a wireless game adapter, i have this combo and it works great.

I think kanezfan's suggestion of using something like smoothwall is your best bet. www.smoothwall.org.

Just install the distro, setup your network cards you are set. There is nothing to it after that, just boot it up and it'll go.

I have a wireless router, but my comp and XBox are upstairs in my room. I don't want to run lots of ethernet cord through my house, and I don't want to spend $65 on a wireless bridge if I don't have to. I'll have to check out this smoothwall thing. thanks.
