NEC 2510a + Windows odd query

edited December 2004 in Hardware
I have already flashed the drive to firmware version 2.17, but will note it wouldnt function correctly as 2.15 or 2.16 either.

OK; No matter what software settings I change- Windows XP detects this drive as a "CD Drive" rather than a DVDRW; and as such I cant write to it with any media. Nero doesnt detect it; CD Mate doesnt detect it, Roxio doesnt detect it. As far as any software is concerned this is just a reader; not a writer.

Im using win XP Pro, no Service packs are currently installed. Its a first release of win.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Obviously this drive is useless to me as it is now. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out and if you need any more info. from me just ask

    First Read here http://club.cdfreaks.com/lite/t-115175.html

And I would also suggest getting a program like knoppix or Mephis linux on cd if you have a 2nd burner or a friend that does. Burn to it and boot up with that cd in the drive and see what linux detects the drive at.

The other thing you could do is this:

    1) Disconnect the Power to the Drive
    2) Reboot the computer and go into System/Device Manager and delete the drive from there.
    3) unintall Nero or any other cd software you have accessing the drive
    4) Reboot again (still disconnected) and make sure that the device is still not shown in your listing
    5) Connect the device and reboot windows should then detect the drive and want to install software for it.
    6) Check to see what it's listed as in Device Manager if it's not named correctly get the drivers for it and install the correct drivers.
    7) Cross your fingers and hope for the best

I've had this happen to me before when I've replaced my primary cdrom with another one. Windows gets held up because of the way programs are linked to that drive and has trouble letting go of the device when you change it. Sometimes the above has worked other times I've had to do a clean install.

Another trick that should work is put a regular cd-rom in where this one is and make this one a 2nd device.
