PNY Attache USB 2.0 Flash drive

edited February 2005 in Hardware
I have just purchased a PNY Attache USB 2.0 Flash Drive
I am having problems getting my computer to recognize it.
My computer is a Compaq Persairo 2266 and I am running Windows 98
on it.

One of the requirements is that the computer be running WIndows
98 SE (second edition) I told the salesperson I didn't know if mine
was the 2nd edition and he said that I would be crashing constantly
if it wasn't. He also said that if it wasn't I'd be able to download the
drivers needed off of the internet.

I went PNY and downloaded the drivers for the flash drive.
Everything seems to download fine and the setup seems to go ok
but my computer doesn't show I have the flash drive.

How do I know if it's working right? I thought that when I checked
under my computer: that it should show A:, C:, D: and some type
of external drive for the flash drive card.

Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

THANKS!

Well first of all from what I remember about 98 is for USB to work properly you have to have windows 98se. If you right click on 'my computer' it'll show you what version you have. Other then that normally any flash device will show up as another drive so a normally a floppy c will be your harddrive and d is your cdrom so you'd have an e drive added to the mix. At least that's how all the ones I've ever used work.

The salesperson was apparently an idiot. The comment about it crashing all the time is dumb. It is more likely to crash, but just because it isn't doesn't mean you have SE.

And, as kryyst said, you need Win98SE to be able to run USB. Right click "My Computer," and click properties. I'm pretty sure it tells you what version of Windows you are running on the first tab.

I ran vanilla windows 98 up to the release of XP and used all manner of USB devices without problems. It was the first windows OS to support USB right out of the box if I remember correctly.

Have a look in the device manager and see what it says in there about your drive. Might give you some indication on whats happening and why. Cant really remember how to get to the device manager in windows 98 but it should be under system in the control panel.

Hmmm... I think you're right. Maybe it's USB 2.0 that SE and above? I remember seeing something about a necessity of SE for some sort of hardware. I forget now. The OS *is* 6 years old now. :)

USB 2 needs XP SP1 I think.. Not sure on that though. Couldnt ship with the driver support but thats about it and yeah... Win98 was way to long ago for my memory too!

My computer says.... Microsoft Windows 98
    4/10/1998

I'm assuming that it is not the 2nd edition.

Is it possible to download the 2nd edition free somewhere?

I don't want to pay to update this computer as it is 6 years old
and we will be replacing it soon. I'm hoping to be able to wait
a little longer though as we really don't have any problems with this one.

I was told I would be able to download SE if needed but I'm not sure
if it's possible or where to get it.

I have done all of the window updates that are available from
    Microsoft.

I'm assuming I'll be returning the flash drive to Staples.

    Thanks!

There's no legal way to get SE for free...

Sorry to say but unless there is a set of drivers out there you are stuck. So just did some quick reading win98 and even some version of 95 came with USB support. However there are certain devices with usb1.1 that require 98se.

I had a similar problem. Tried all the drivers on the PNY website but nothin worked. Their technical assistance was no help either.
It turns out that the flash drive was recognized as a Samsung Mighty Drive.
Go to Samsung.com and click on "Products".
Under "Global Business Products" click on "Nand/Nor Flash".
Place the cursor on "Products" and select "USB Driver(Win 98)" to download the driver.
You may need to plug in your flash drive and "remove" it in Device Manager.
If it does not appear in Device Manager as Mighty Drive under USB Hub, you may have another problem.
Unzip and install the driver. Then plug in the flash drive. It should install and appear in My Computer.

    I have a Windows 98SE box.
I recently got a Windows XP box.
The PNY USB 2.0 Flash Drive was detected and easily formated on the XP box.
No such luck on the Windows 98SE box.
No luck trying all the PNY Flash Drive drivers.
No luck with the Samsung.com Nand/Nor Flash drivers.
    Here's what did work though;
    go to;
    http://www.exuberant.ms11.net/
(Their site is a good read.)
get the 98SE Service Pack (12.2MByte) and install - reboot
Install the PNYs M20.ZIP file from the Flash Driver page (if you don't already have it).
Plug in the Flash Drive - success (on 3 different 98SE boxes).
