Hello this is a old one for you guys I have a AMD Athlon 800 Mhz now the life time on it is coming to a end it keeps freezing up the computer and just not that it has been overheating now. I guess soon I will not have a working computer. I was hoping you guys would be able to help me out figure away of saving it or better yet away of upgrading it. I have a IBM Aptiva Model 2174-811 1998 computer, now its running windows xp fine and perfect, also plays top of the line games with out any problems well just one freezing. Please any good advice on this would help me save my computer and keep me connected lol.

Have you tried doing a full/clean re-install? If you haven't for awhile you'd be amazed at the wonders it can do.

It might not be the processor. It could very well be the ram.

well if you think it definitely is something with the processor I would recommend just buying a new one, atleast that is what I did. I had a 750mhz duron computer and just swapped it for a 1300mhz duron. I bought the brand new retail packaged duron from newegg well over a year ago for about $35 or something like that. That is a duron though, not an athlon, but they are 100% compatible and I really like that computer still, if just feels "zippy" much zippier than even my main computer.

I looked up that model, and it is a classic Slot A Athlon processor. You can still replace it, you just have to find someplace selling those old processors. The fastest you will ever find is 1Ghz if you are lucky. If it is overheating and locking up, you may just need to remove the heatsink and reapply some new thermal compound, and or replace the fan if it has one. When is it freezing up? All the time or just while you are running 3d apps? I wish I could help more, but you didn't give a lot of information about when it freezes. There are still Slot A Athlons kicking around out there though. Good luck.

Here is a link to a cheap replacement CPU if you decide to go that route.

That is a slot a thunderbird too, which would be a good upgrade from the classic athlon. Hope this helps, take care.
