graphics problem

edited January 2005 in Hardware
I purchased a brand new geforce 6800 oc video card and when I play far cry or doom 3 or whatever, the graphics seem to lag up a lil sometimes, and then a lot others. Then, in far cry, the auto detect settings tell me to play on all settings LOW. I have a pentium 2.8ghz processor and enough ram to play, I think it might be a conflict with my bios. I installed my friend's ATI 9800 and it ran even more crappy than mine, but when I played far cry at on his system, it seemed just fine, nice and smooth, good water quality, etc... also, with my 6800, the shadows in far cry look blue and black, literally patches of blue in areas, and the water shows up all crappy. When I used my 5700 LE, nothing ever happened. I don't know whats wrong, perhaps I need to download something? I went to the nvidia site, and downloaded their most recent drivers, please help.

update your BIOS and motherboard drivers. That may fix a lot of problems (this sounds like it's your mobo's fault)

Have you installed the Far Cry 1.3 Patch? That doesn't explain the lagging, but it could help with the blue patches. I had the same problem on my Geforce 6800 Ulta OC, and the patch fixed it.

Make sure your AGP aperature setting is set to half of your available system memory also (in the bios) or as high as it will let you set it. Some cards are picky about that.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and set the aperature settings to 256 and couldn't find any BIOS, but I think I found the solution. Just reinstalled the game/s to my newer hard drive. They were all installed on my old one, since I have two. My 40gb primary, and the 200gb seagate secondary. Also, before I did that, it would take about 2 minutes to load a game. But on the new one, about 20 seconds. Then what I noticed was during the game, when the doors would open, or any new sounds came in, or I began to shoot, the game would pause for about half a second, then continue. That's how I realized my old HD isn't good for games. But the bad thing is, I want to replace my 40gb seagate with a newer one, but I don't know how to install Windows XP on it, or how to load up the drives on a fresh hard drive too well. If any one knows, help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you erased all the old drivers thouroughly? You should use a program for that, I forget the name of one though, somebody here knows. This should be done even if it appears better now.

Thanks, I looked up the google link. And now I know how to do that. If you know the name I can get it, don't bother in posting a link.

Crap, I can't find that old driver removal program. Now when I play DFBHD, it says I still have the other video card. I bet all my other games do the same, no wonder Far Cry says I can only play game with low settings.

Here's a link to Detonator R.I.P. which removes leftover parts of Nvidia drivers after you uninstall them through control panel or device manager.
