PC Value/Overclocking Questions

edited January 2005 in Hardware
I want to build a liquid cooled pc using a Koolance Case and an AMD 64 Processor 1 gig of ram and Radeon X800 Pro. I have $300 of the about $960 I need, but I was wondering how much my used PC would sell for.
It's a HP Pavilion 751x with a Athlon Xp 2000+ 1.67ghz, 60gb HD, DVD-RW burner, CD-ROM, 768Mb of RAM, and still runs fine, I need to replace the fans, but I can do that easily. What is the worth on something like that?

Next order of business, should I go for a Mobile AMD 64 754 Pin 3000+,
or an AMD 64 939Pin Winchester 3000+? I hear the mobiles have MAD OC abilities, and it saves me a bit of money going Mobile. Would a MSI K8n NEO Platinum Board hold the Mobile? Thanks

I am guesstimating here, but I was thinking $700-800 for the PC with stock video card, and $1100-1200 with Radeon X800 Pro. It comes stock with a GeForce MX series.

I don't think you are going to get anywhere near that bro, not when you can buy a new Dell for 500 bucks. It's hard to get much for used pc's.

Oh, and I would go with a socket 939 board for sure. 754 boards don't have as long of an upgrade path.

But I save money on the 754, but I do understand your view, because if I wanted to, I could get an fx-55 and throw it in there

Ok, which is better, buy a cool case first and add in watercooling (EXOS system) or buy case with watercooling pre-installed? The cheapest watercooled case I've seen is $133, but the case I want plus exos plus waterblocks is more. I wanted a "Gray" NZXT Nemesis, and strap on the EXOS to that. I think it'd be awesome, the color matches and everything, and I can take it places. Portable. Now the pre-assembled is harder because
The refill for the resevoir is at the bottom! (Fixed in the newer MORE EXPENSIVE models) that and it's heavier. But I think the NZXT+Exos is much cooler. Ideas anyone? I can currently buy the NZXT Case, the AMD 64 3000+ 939 Winchester core cpu, and the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (Refurbished/OEM for $108), and then add in watercooling/new HD/new memory/overclocking later. The case, motherboard, and processor run me about $379 (with shipping) which isn't too bad, I have $350 at the moment so it'd be cool. Just lookin for opinions

I would say make it completely custom, and get quality parts you like that perform well and that won't leak. Just think how you want the water system in/out of your case and make judgements from there. I would probably buy it all at the same time to get it shipped quicker, but the smart thing to do is probably buy the water stuff first, then the case, and then go get any extra water stuff you may need, like tubing from the hardware store.

I agree - don't buy a pre-built watercooling case. Build your own custom setup, as far as I know pre-built setups are never as good as custom watercooling setups with good quality parts.

Thejackal, also think whats your main goal in building a new rig - do you want performance? Or are looks more important to You? Or maybe you are aiming for a quiet pc? (I myself would want a quiet, good looking case with top notch performance though :p thats not as easily done as said)

Well yes, I want top notch performance for a good price. I already have the video card (ATi X800 Pro 256mb) but I need to order the rest
My current thoughts on a setup, (custom) is this.
    Case:NZXT Nemesis (Gray)
Mobo: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Edition
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (939 Winchester Edition)
DVD Drive: NEC Dual Layer 16x DVD Burner (Silver to match case)
    Memory: Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PT 1GB DDR400 XMS3200 Dual-Channel Memory w/Platinum Heat Spreader
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 160gb Serial ATA
Video Card: ATi Radeon X800 Pro 256mb 12 pipelines (thinkin of modding to XT)
Cooling: Koolance EXOS system with CPU-300-H06 cooler and AMD 64 adapter, and GPU-180-L06 motherboard cooler
I plan to overclock my 3000+ to about 2.5-2.6 stable, hopefully.

Nice setup, just having that video card and the ram is enough for top performance. You should definitly try modding the card to 16 pipelines (that is, if its possible). I haven't read any articles about it but I heard the newest version of RivaTuner can unlock the locked pipelines - only if you are lucky and they aren't faulty.

Also make sure the WD hard drive is a quiet one. Read up on some user opinions or reviews. My two HD's give off a neat.. er NASTY screech, so make sure the hd model is quality.

Once you install the watercooling please make some pictures, I'm hungry for some eye candy.

OK here's my deal now, I have enough for the Processor, Case (Not Watercooled YET) and Motherboard. BUT ONLY if I use the Refurbished/OEM motherboard. Which I am very skeptic about... it is from newegg
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-468R&depa=00
Is this an OK move? or should I try to get the extra 50 I need?
