Need help with WiFi

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
have been using the DLink DI-624 for some odd months. Just the other day bought the DLink DI-784 for 802.11 Super A/G. I made the mistake of monitoring the signal strength with the Windows XP utility instead of the one for the Atheros chipset for the mini WiFi card. Seems when you go Super A or G the Transmit and Receive (the receive rate tends to stay at 108Mpbs almost all of the time however) rates can fluctuate as well as the Signal Quality (around 11%). The Signal Strength always seems to stay at 100%. I'm in a townhouse with 1100 S.F. and nothing really to speak of blocking the signal. The unit sits on the loft. It seems the Signal Quality sits around 11% when running the Super A/G mode or even running them individually (you can turn off A or G seperately).

Right now, as I'm testing different frequencies (A vs G and with or without Super A or G enabled), I can see the rates fluctuate. The router is only about 3 feet away and just below the laptop as it sits under the desk. So there is only a layer of wood between the two.

I cannot tell for sure yet but Super A/G must not be as stable or I need to make adjustments. When not in Super A or G mode it seems more stable and G seems more stable than A. At 802.11G (not in Super mode) it seems to have stable Receive and Transmit rates as well as Signal Strength and Quality. Then verifying this using the utility with the Atheros Mini WiFi card.

Any thoughts? Often it's tweaks that need to be made. I've worked with WiFi equipment but not at this level. If it is the unit then I'd rather get another one or a different brand within the stores return policy time frame.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. One thing I overlooked. These routers have the ability to switch in and out of Turbo mode as well as Dynamic and Static Turbo. This impacts rates as well.
