SP2 - Rant

So I've been putting it off and putting it off but on the weekend I updated to service pack 2 on my home rig (I've done it on other rigs before but they didn't run anything weird).

Since I installed it, my airport express no longer works, Kai for xbox no longer works, it's blocking all email, about 1 out of 10 times it picks up an IP through DHCP and then about 1 out of those 10 times the DNS server. If I set it to static it doesn't work at all. If I click on a movie file or whatever in explorer it'll work fine. However if I open up a movie player first and then try and browse a file it crashes half the time. Nero same deal. It uninstalled my video card drivers and wouldn't detect my video card so I had to re-install the drivers off the net (which was a bitch of a time given my internet connection issues).

Things I've done to remedy the situation. I dissabled the windows Firewall/ICS service. That started airport express up again so I could at least ping my xbox. However now it won't connect to the internet at all but it is consistantly pickup up an IP through DHCP from my router. It's also, I noticed installed something called Internet Connection in my Network Neighbourhood which wasn't there before and it's been enabled, though it has nothing in the settings or property tabs. I also can't dissable it. The limited help on it has something to do with ICS but turning on the service makes no changes in my ability to dissable it.

Other issues are still persistant.

I tried uninstalling SP2 lastnight which uninstalled...however that's only solved my file crashing issues, oh and it dissabled my video card drivers again and now I'm stuck in 640x480 and can't get on the net at all.

ipconfig /all is telling me that my host and DNS is my own machine and regardless of what I've tried it won't keep any changes. It however has removed that Internet Connection thing from Network Neighbourhood but I still can't get on the net.

So no need to offer help on the situation I'm doing a clean install again. I just felt like bitching.

Reinstall SP2 before you set up your system again (after the clean install) and see if you still have the same problems. I've had no problem with it yet other than a game which blue screened. That was more an issue with the game though, stopped playing it after that though im sure they updated it.

i refuse to touch sp2. this christmas break i have had to deal with two seperate computers in two separate locations where sp2 blocked port 80 by default. now, that seems like a horrible idea to me, especially since the vast majority of people dont know what the sh*t port 80 is. i figured this out, cuz they said their email worked but "internet" (aka using a browser) did not work. so i tried to putty to my linux box, and it worked fine. the real test though, was i loaded up my gmail account, and it worked with no problems cuz gmail is https (8080). anyway, that is my little rant, long story short, we CAN disable the firewalls and the network connections its monitoring, but after reboot, it re-enables. so, when they shut down the computer at night, in the morning, they have to turn it on, fix settings, reboot, and then stuff works. but its a hassle they shouldnt have to go through. i am thinking of doing a system restore, but i just dont know if i want to trust another microsoft "innovation". anywho, i think it is stupid that people are bred to ph34r the format. i format my machine if it even looks at me funny (thank god for custom xp cds), which usually ends up being every one or two monthes. anyway, thats my rant.

I installed SP2 on a few of my friends machines as guinea pigs before doing it to my main one. I had no problems with it on other machines so last weekend I finally did it on my main machine. Now my mp3 player doesn't connect to it. I use it every day, and since I haven't had time to figure out why the USB connecting to it no longer works, I have to download what I want to listen to onto a flash drive, copy it onto my laptop (no SP2 yet....now ever!) and THEN download it onto my mp3 player.

I've installed SP2 on about 6 different machines with 0 problems. I love the thing to be totally honest, much better wireless functionality. Like the firewall/popup blocker integrated. Now I just with they would include an Anti Virus :/. Antitrust laws will stop that one though most likely.
