Windows Won't Defrag

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
Thank You for your advice in advance! My friend is using "Windows Me." It slowed way down so he ran system clean up and then defrag. The defrag doesn't get far though, it keeps bouncing back from 2% to 0 percent and won't go any further than that. He ran it for 10 hours and it did the same thing, never went beyond 2 Percent. He never ran defrag and the computer is a few years old. Any suggestions?

*run scan disk first, it might correct some disk errors that are preventing defrag to run properly.
*also, clear out the temporary internet files and empty recycle bin.
*temporarily disable the screensaver if one is running.
*you might also want to "end task" on all items except for Explorer and Systray (do this via Ctrl_Alt_Del).

    then run defrag.

    see if that helps.

Thank You Lin! We ran scan disc and it defragged with no problem after that. It really improved performance. Thank You!
