Re-install Windows XP from partition without using floppy drive??

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
Hi,

I've got big problems on my PC... I need to re-install windows (or possibly format my hard-drive if re-installing Windows doesn't do that?) as I've got viruses & spyware galore on it at the moment and its slowing the thing down to virtually unusable.

I've got a floppy disk which is the recovery disk and kicks off the re-installation of Windows from the partition but my floppy drive just does not work so I cannot re-install. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to re-install from the partition without using a recovery disk? Or can I put the files from the recovery disk onto another media for it to read from there?

I do not have the original Windows XP CD by the way as it was pre-installed on my machine.

Please say somebody can help!!

Thanks

Nope your pretty much sunk. You need the original disk. Which I might add if you bought your machine and it came pre-installed they have to by law give you some form of the OS on cd either as a normal disk or as part of a recovery package...

Anyway if you've got a tonne of viruses then your copy on the hdd that you are trying to recover with is most likely corrupt anyway so restoring from there would probably not fix your problem.

    OK... Thanks anyway.

I've got the floppy disk which has the recovery tools on but thats it, thats all that came with it.

    Thanks for the advice though
