Question on re-installing XP Pro

I've got someone that wants to know if you can re-install a purchased copie of XP pro over a pirated copie of XP pro so as not to lose his info on the drives. I don't know if it will let him redo the serial # on the re-install. I warned him about using the pirate copie and he went and bought the full version.
I reformatted my drives when I installed my purchased copie, so I can't give him an answer on whether it will work or not.
So, If any of you know for sure I'd appreciate the info. Thnx

Yeah you can do a re-install of sperate pirate/legit ones as long as they are both the same ie both pro, both home etc... When you do the recovery install it asks you to plug in the serial number at some point. He shouldn't loose any of his settings.

Now one thing I can't say for sure is if you can put a personal version of Pro over a corporate version of Pro. I doubt it'll be a problem but I've never tried it so I can't say for certain.

Thnx kryyst, I'll let him know. He was freakin out over the thought of losing all his data and programs. This will make him happy.

He knows he could just change his CD key right?

Cool, I didn't know you could change the cd key. Guess that would legalize it. So, I know he doesn't know. What do you do? Change the cd key and then load SP-1 & SP-2. And if you can do that. How do you change the cd key?
