Move space away from D and put on C drive

edited February 2005 in Hardware
Hi,

I just got my first computer. I got an 80GB harddrive. There is very little space on C drive but lots on D drive. I don't see the sense in this because I need most of the space to be on C drive. How can I take space away from D drive and put in on C drive?

Thanks

What do you mean "take" space?

    is it partitioned?

? D: drive? thats usually your optical drive. do you have 2 partions or something and have the second set as D:?

It depends on the ide connections i figure. But the harddrives should be masters
Primary and secondary or the end connections.
    My opticals are E and F secondary's
So more on your 1 or 2 or partitioned hd.Someone might have done this wrong and put Windows on the small partition.
Yes fdisk is hard to use. :yell1:

Windows XP is on C drive which has only 16GB. My D drive has 58.5GB. Everything I do is on C drive so I run out of space very quickly. I think it may be incorrectly partitioned like you say. Is there an easy step by step process to fix this? I'm very new to computers so I don't know very much.

    Thanks

Partition Magic could do that, but its not free software so if that kind of thing bothers you it may not be the best option...

Thats usually a good method,If Windows was on the large one,but i doubt if there anyway to move Windows from 1 HD to another with the registry protection probably tuned in to the other 16 gb HD.
But if you remove the small HD,Install Windows on the big one then a reinstall the small one as D,then all the files will be there to move or leave.
So you should be able to save everything you have this way.But remember remove the 16 gb.This will be more or less a new start.
Note too:Program Folder software probably will need to be installed, but you will not lose any data.music.pictures etc.
    Thats how i did mine.
If this isn't clear please ask what isn't.Thanks

What exactly are you putting on the C: drive that you can't put on the D:? !6GB should be more than enough for core application installs. If you're downloading like mad, just put the data on a folder on the D:. Most software will allow you to specify a folder to place items in.

The OS on the smaller partition helps to increase response time.
