Why Only 84%

I recently reinstalled Win2K Pro on a new harddrive. I ,as always when new OS installed, went to Windows Update Update site where it said I needed IE6. I shut the browser down for I have IE6 on a CD from Microsoft. I went to 84% and hangs. I did this 3 times and each time the same symptom. OK, So now I go online to let MS do the update. Guess what , 84% and hang. I get "setup was uable to install all the components, close all applications and run setup again". 2 times again with same message. Also on bootup, I get the other message about a missing link? That was after trying on the net to do the update. Getting to the point of chucking out my second floor to the driveway below, almost.........................Bruce :help:

When it gets to 84% does it come back with an error message or does it just stop working? It sounds like the problem is you started dl'ing the updates and then installed IE6 off the cd. The problem now is that it's going to continue to finish trying to install the updates and won't let you continue past that point.

You have to let the system realise that the update isn't working so it fixes itself. Once it gets to 84% it should (though it may take an hour or more) realise that it's not getting any further and come back with an error. After which you should be able to finish the updates.

However if that doesn't work you could do a repair install which will reset things.

When it got to 84%, after the first time, I let it alone thinking it would go more on. I let it sit for alone waiting for almost an hour and then each time I got the above message. I dont have much on the hard drive yet so Tonight I'm thinking of blowing it away via FDISK and starting from scratch, maybe something went ariey during the first install of 2k. Will keep you posted, hopefully I'll have time tonight to do it

You also must have other crap running to mess it up.Beside W2k and 5.5 are a better combo. With other online updates.
That cd must have been an XP disc right.?
Maybe "hangs" requires some waiting patients.
Keep off the mouse and kbd and relax.
    :)
